Elder Grove School found to be one of the oldest schools of Montana.

Elder Grove School was built as a county school in 1885 just 4 years before the Montana Territory became a state. The Elder Grove School was built as single story square building on a wooden frame. It stairs were constructed using adobe clay. Through much of the 19th century, Elder Grove School was an elementary school that served as a 1-8 before becoming a K-8 school sometime in the 20th century. After 8th grade is when students transferred to Billings to attend high school.

Elder Grove School operated in its own school district called Elder Grove School District. Elder Grove School District is one of the oldest school districts in the state. Elder Grove School District was known as School District #2.

The single story square building that was built in 1885 was demolished in 1922 and the current rectangular school building was built to replace the older school building. More buildings were added to the property throughout the 20th century and 21st century.

Many additions were added during the 21st century. The latest addition to Elder Grove School was completed in 2014. On April 14, 2016, a new addition that would serve as a middle school was opened on the Elder Grove School property. The middle school is called Elder Grove Middle School. Elder Grove Middle School will educate students in grades 6-8.

Today this historic school still uses the original schoolhouse and bell and serves as a prime example of true community. According to School Superintendent Justin Klebe, “Elder Grove School is the essence of a small country school.” Elder Grove School is found to be one of the oldest schools of Montana.


8th Grade Graduation is the most import event for Elder Grove School because after 8th grade is when students from Elder Grove School of the Elder Grove School District transfer to Billings to attend high school. The 8th Grade Graduation is an honored longtime tradition for Elder Grove School and Elder Grove School District.

Elder Grove School District operates Elder Grove School (Elder Grove Elementary School), Elder Grove Middle School, and Schmitz School. Elder Grove School District is a K-8 school district as it always has been.
