History of Cape May Point Bunker in New Jersey unsealed.

Cape May Point Bunker was a concrete military bunker equipped with gun emplacement that was built in 1940 in the wake of World War II. State of New Jersey and US Navy allocated government funding to build 20 foot tall, 30 feet wide military bunker to defend the East Coast of the United States from enemy attacks. The construction cost was $219,000.

The round turrets held 6 inch guns on each side. Panama Mounts are those horseshoe-shaped structures which can be seen in front during low tide on the oceanside. The Panama Mounts were built in July 1941 and held four 155mm coast artillery guns.

Cape May Point Bunker that stood on high ground 900 feet away from the ocean. Cape May Point Bunker is built of reinforced concrete. The roof and walls are 6 feet thick. Erosion has washed away the land in front of and under the bunker. Its design was pretty standard.

This concrete bunker was once buried 900 feet inland prior to 2005. The bunker was held up by stabilizing piles never meant to support its weight. Cape May Point Bunker was restored by the State of New Jersey in 2005 as part of the beach restoration in Cape May. It is now on ground as a result of the beach restoration.

All entrances were sealed by the State of New Jersey in August 2009. In 2010, the State of New Jersey transferred ownership of Cape May Point Bunker to New Jersey Park Service.
