Edelhoff’s is one of the most forgotten beer taverns of Flint, Michigan. Not too much history or information about this beer tavern can be found online or offline. The news article will attempt to cover the history of Edelhoff’s in the best way possible.
The infamous most dangerous street corner of Dayton Street & Dupont Street in the King neighborhood of Flint, Michigan is no stranger to beer taverns as bar taverns such as Civic Park Bar, Civic Park Tavern, Civic Park Cocktail Lounge, Civic Park Lounge, Cheezy Ice Cream, D'S CP BAR, and Da Spot once occupied Dupont Street. So that is no surprise.
EDELHOFF'S was established by Mrs. Katherine Edelhoff and Ervin J. Cummings sometime during the 20th century. Exactly when is unknown. Edelhoff’s started operating at the address of 2433 Dupont Street. Edelhoff’s was then located at 2433 Dupont Street, Flint, Michigan, US 48504.
According to the Genesee County Clerk/Register internet database, Edelhoff’s occupied the same location as Civic Park Cocktail Lounge and Da Spot once occupied which was 2407 Dupont Street. So Edelhoff’s must have later expanded their tavern into what was once Civic Park Cocktail Lounge and Da Spot. The two would use the 2433 Dupont Street location as their headquarters. (Ref: Genesee County Clerk/Register internet database)
EDELHOFF'S used to issue 10¢ cent beer tokens which were constructed out of aluminum and were 25mm in diameter during the 1930s. These token were gold colored. (Ref: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/edelhoffs-beer-wine-store-2407-dupont-1872594086)
According to an entry from Flint City Directory dating back to 1934, EDELHOFF'S was also EDELHOFF'S Beer & Wine Store and also EDELHOFF'S Bar-B-Que. Flint City Directory listed EDELHOFF'S as being located at 2407 Dupont Street. (Ref: Flint City Directory, 1934)
However an article from the Detroit Free Press dating back to 1949 has a tavern listed at the location of 2433 Dupont Street in Flint. Edelhoff’s or another tavern could have been occupying that location by then. There is a slight possibility of their offices having been operated from that location. Or this could have been an error on part of the journalist. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/97839827/)
Now what led to the closure of Edelhoff’s or why Edelhoff’s is currently unknown. There could have been a plethora of reasons for Edelhoff’s to have closed down.
Edelhoff’s was located at 2433 Dupont Street, Flint, Michigan, US 48504. The tavern was later located at 2407 Dupont Street, Flint, Michigan, US 48504.
