Mitchell Lake School is one of the forgotten schools of San Antonio and Bexar County. Not too much history has been preserved in documentation as not much history about this school can be found either. This school is only remembered in name. Mitchell Lake School was also known as Mitchell’s Lake School.
Mitchell Lake School was built and established south of San Antonio on Pleasanton Road in 1820. This school was said to be located near Mitchell Lake which is where the namesake for this school came from. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/39252545/)
Now the school building was a log cabin as this was common practice during the 19th century. This was not unusual for San Antonio. Mitchell Lake School was located in School District No. 87 also known as Mitchell Lake School District.
The school taught students in grades 1-8. 9th grade was added later. Classes for 10th grade and 11th grade students were eventually added as well. Mitchell Lake School was a 1-9 school much throughout the 19th century.
Mitchell Lake School was a thriving school and was located in a good school district by the end of the 1910s decade. The news made it in an article of the San Antonio Evening News. “Among the schools that have been doing especially good work are the Mitchell Lake School District.” (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/39269874/)
The school was closed somewhere before 1941. Exactly when though is unknown. The reasons why this school closed or what led to it demise is unknown. Today the school is no longer extant.
Mitchell Lake School was located on Pleasanton Road, San Antonio, Texas, US.
