French Road Elementary School is one the many forgotten schools of Detroit, Michigan. Sadly hardly any information can be discovered online or offline. Not much information about this school has been archived or preserved. This news article will attempt to explain the history of this school.
French Road School was named after the street French Road which the school property was located on. French Road School was an elementary school which known as French Road Elementary School and was a 1-8 school educated students in grades 1 through 8 operating from 1910 to 1948. This school was built around 1910 as a single story rectangular building. Over the years, extensions and modifications were made to this building. It is not known if this school had been remodeled or not.
1948 was the last year this school would operate. Detroit Public School had sold the property to Detroit Parks Department later that year. French Road Elementary School was demolished in 1949 to make way for a park which be known as Arthur L. Fletcher Playfield. No trace of French Road Elementary School remained by 1950.
One of the most notable teachers of French Road Elementary School was Sister Elizabeth Huhler Watson. She was a teacher for 10 years at French Road School before transferring to St. Clair Shores to teach at their Catholic schools. (Ref: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/40787813/elizabeth-watson)
Elizabeth A. Watson was another notable teacher at French Road Elementary School. She was a schoolteacher at French Road School for many years. Elizabeth A.
