Mixerr Album Reviews #378

This is Michael Mixerr. Tonight I will review Bobby Sherwood - Classics in Jazz from 1956 on Capitol Records.

To me, Bobby Sherwood was the Frank Sinatra of Chamber jazz music and Big Band jazz since he was a band leader in the 1940s. Bobby Sherwood was often overlooked by teenyboppers since they were more into Elvis, Buddy Holly, Quincy Jones, and The Impressions at the time. Bobby Sherwood never got the recognition he deserved basically.
Bobby Sherwood's life has been based on show business. He is a fine arranger. Bobby Sherwood is outstanding on his trumpet.

Sherwood's Forest is Bobby Sherwood's most well known song of all time. It's a progressive modern jazz piece of a jazz composition. Bobby Sherwood had set a new standard with Sherwood's Forest. For those who didn't know, this was the first jazz composition Sherwood had wrote for Capitol Records. This composition turned out to be a hit for Bobby Sherwood. The orchestral performance was marvelous!

Swingin' At The Semloh is a guitar classic laid out as a blueprint by Bobby Sherwood. Swingin' At The Semloh is real wild upbeat jazz. Bobby had wrote this song as his own original song while performing on an unamplified guitar. That was his own original idea for a song. Swingin' At The Semloh is a classic song for unamplified guitars to play to. In other words, it's a classic song for unamplified guitars as an original composition written by Bobby Sherwood. Let me put it that way.

Cotton Tail is a jazz composition piece that is upbeat in tempo. Bobby Sherwood is outstanding on his trumpet on this particular jazz composition. Cotton Tail is real wild jazz! Upbeat jazz that is! Herbie Haymer is playing the tenor saxophone. Walkin' and Talkin' is a relaxed nonchalant smooth jazz composition piece by Bobby Sherwood. The song has a relaxed rhythm. Bobby Sherwood is amazing on the trumpet! The band is playing the precision.
Bill Covey played the alto sax on The Elk's Parade. The alto sax has a memorable tone. Great tenor sax too at that! Bugle Call Rag is quite an unusual jazz composition piece inspired by the bugle call theme.

Poor Little Rich Girl is another original jazz composition piece written by Bobby Sherwood. Poor Little Rich Girl was added to many movies soundtracks over the years. Let me say that Poor Little Rich Girl was a well known song at one point in time. I love the drums and percussion. So would you! The beats are solid and have edge. Poor Little Rich Girl is not covered by musicians and arrangers very often for some reason.

I rate this album, Classics in Jazz, 5/5*****!
