History behind LoMonda School in San Antonio, Texas explored.

Not much of the history behind LoMonda School in San Antonio, Texas is known or can be discovered. However there are mentions of this school in newspaper clippings. LoMonda School is one of San Antonio’s lesser known schools. LoMonda School is one of the many forgotten schools of San Antonio.




What is known about the LoMonda School is that the LoMonda School shared the same campus as Crockett Elementary School (Crockett School). There is a slight possibility that LoMonda School existed before 1974. LoMonda School started being mentioned in newspapers by 1975.

San Antonio Independent School District (San Antonio ISD) offered the sites of Crockett Elementary School and LoMonda School which were listed as “2 parcels of unimproved land, 2314 W. Commerce and LoMonda School site” in the classified section of the San Antonio Express newspaper on the date of Sunday, February 16, 1975. “San Antonio independent School District offers for Sale the following: 4 parcels of improved land, Crockett, Fannin, Cuney, and San Juan School sites. 2 parcels of unimproved land, 2314 W. Commerce and LoMonda School site. Bid forms or specifications may be obtained from the Purchasing Office, 1215 Austin Street, 224-2781. Sealed bids will be opened at 2:00 p.m., April 1, 1975 at the Purchasing Office.”

Interestingly enough, LoMonda School was listed as “LaManda School” in an add from San Antonio Independent School District listed in the classified section of the San Antonio Express newspaper on the date of Sunday, February 18, 1975. LoMonda School was sharing the same campus as Crockett Elementary School at the time. LoMonda School was also known as the LaManda School which was another name this school went by. The school was renamed to LaManda School in 1975. Of course, however, this could have been a typographical error on part of the San Antonio Express newspaper.

The sites of Crockett Elementary School and LoMonda School were still listed as “2 parcels of unimproved land”. These two schools were located on 4 acres of land. That is also what else is known about the LoMonda School. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/82036289/)

The LoMonda School was sold to the Mexican-American Unity Council for $151,000 dollars on the date of Thursday, October 10, 1975. San Antonio Express announced the news in one of their articles. The Mexican-American Unity Council would begin using this building in 1976 after renovations were completed. The Mexican-American Unity Council currently owns the LoMonda School.
