Carr Hill School is one of the forgotten schools of San Antonio. Not much history is known about this school. This news article will explain the history behind Carr Hill Street School.
Carr Hill School was organized in San Antonio, Texas in September 1906 for Mexican American children. Carr Hill School was one of the many schools established and organized in San Antonio during the early 20th century. San Antonio ISD built the Carr Hill School on San Antonio’s west side for the benefit of Mexican-American students. Prof. Knox believed Carr Hill School benefit of Mexican-American students. The campus of Carr Hill School was known for having long rows of elm trees. These elm trees were planted in an attempt to beautify the Carr Hill School campus. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/38699583/)
“The Carr Hill building is progressing. They now have a couple of long rows of two year old trees, which will be planted to beautify and shade the grounds at the new school on Carr Hill, when completed. Prof. Knox is very proud of his new manual training building. This was partly erected from money contributed. ”
2 rooms were added in 1907 to accommodate 200 students attending that school. There was close to a total of 300 students attending Carr Hill School by the end of 1907.
However tragedy struck when serious damage was a reported to have been done to Carr Hill School in late 1908. San Antonio Gazette reported about the damage in a news article under the headlines of “Serious Damage Reported to Have Been Done to Carr Hill School”. “It was alleged that poor workmanship last night with what might be earlier the part of the contractors had resulted in serious and almost impeccable damage to the Carr Hill School No. 21.”
Carr Hill School operated throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The date of when Carr Hill School closed down remains unknown. San Antonio newspapers no longer mentioned Carr Hill School after 1940. What is known is that Carr Hill School no longer exists. All of the buildings connecting to this school have been demolished.
