History of Coupland Grain elevator explained.

This news article will explain some history behind one of the most well known grain elevators to have ever operated in the town of Coupland, Texas called the Coupland Grain elevator.

Coupland Grain Company moved on to property owned by C. W. Pfluger and Ed C. Griffith that was located east of Coupland, Texas in 1955. Here Coupland Grain Company would share the same property as Copeland Feed & Milling Co along with Coupland Gin Company.

The Coupland Grain elevator tower was installed and assembled on the date of Thursday, July 21, 1955 and made headline news on the Taylor Daily Press. The Coupland Grain elevator was owned by Coupland Grain Company. At that time, Coupland Grain Company was managed by Kenneth Shackelford of Odom. The owner of Coupland Grain Company was Frank Bailey of Fort Worth along with C. W. Pfluger. (Ref: Taylor Daily Press, Page 15, Thursday, July 21, 1955)

The Coupland Grain elevator tower was located on this property for many decades. The Coupland Grain elevator tower was a triangular structure located left of St. Peter's Church. The tower of the grain elevator was along the railroad tracks and south of FM 1466. The Coupland Grain elevator tower brightly graced the Coupland skyline. Work began on two separate grain handling structures in 1959 as reported by the Austin American newspaper. One was operated as a grain elevator only, while the other handled sorghum grain storage. “Work has begun on two separate grain handling structures in Coupland. One will be operated as a grain elevator only, while the other will handle government sorghum grain storage. The grain elevator is to be known as the Coupland Grain Company. It will handle maize and shelled corn and have storage capacity of approximately 12 cars.”

The Coupland Grain elevator was leased to Wilcox-Elliott, Inc. of Taylor in 1976. Their lease on this grain elevator lasted from 1976 to 1978. “The Coupland Grain elevator has been leased to Wilcox-Elliott, Inc. of Taylor and will be under the general management of Calvin T. The Coupland Grain elevator tower was disassembled and removed in 2008. Today the Coupland Grain elevator tower is gone. Other machinery and equipment belonging to Copeland Feed & Milling Co along with Coupland Grain Company were removed and dismantled. 2008 is the year when Coupland Grain Company was dissolved and had shut down operations.
