This article will explain some of the details behind the abandoned Camp Cronin in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Camp Cronin is one of Rhode Island’s overlooked abandoned places which not many people are aware of or known about.
Camp Cronin was established as a fisherman’s club and nature camp around 1899. The exact dates of when Camp Cronin was established and incorporated are unknown. (Ref: https://www.yellowpages.com/narragansett-ri/mip/camp-cronin-1237210)
In 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused extensive damage to the area surrounding Camp Cronin and washed out a portion of the access road that runs from Ocean Road to the jetty. The breakwater repair project was performed by the US Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with DEM, and included construction of a 70-foot wide, 480-foot long hybrid stone revetment to stabilize the shoreline and restore safe public access to the fishing area. The project also included repairs to the adjacent East Shore Arm Breakwater of the Point Judith Harbor of Refuge. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), in partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers held a special ceremony to mark completion of a restoration project at the Camp Cronin Fishing Area in Narragansett. Several cleanups around the property have been performed and executed. For example the most recent cleanup was on Sunday, August 15, 2021 by Ocean Recovery Community Alliance. That is when the fishing area was cleaned up. (Ref: https://stayhappening.com/e/camp-cronin-pj-cleanup-E2ISTUK0RDS)
Camp Cronin has been permanently closed and is no longer in use or active. This chunk of private property is currently being used as a municipal property. However Camp Cronin is off limits to the public since Camp Cronin is located on private property. The buildings are boarded up with plywood and sit abandoned.
