History of Denver Resurvey School in Galveston, Texas explored in historic context.

The Denver Resurvey School was a heavy brick structure built in 1898 at a cost of $10,000 by the Board of Trustees of the Galveston Public Free Schools. The Honorable the Board of Trustees of the Public Free Schools of the City of Galveston reported that Denver Resurvey School opened with fine interest and high attendance. Denver Resurvey School was completely wrecked by a hurricane during the 1900 storm. Substantial damage wrecked Denver Resurvey School. Water was 5 feet deep on the first floor of Denver Resurvey School. 18 US Soldiers lost their lives saving people from Denver Resurvey School. “Of the more than forty artillerymen in the barracks, the sergeant and some thirty others struck out for Denver Resurvey School several blocks away. Three were drowned on the way. Shortly before the artillerymen left for the school building, Walter Grover arrived home in the office buggy.”

Galveston Daily News discussed about the substantial damage done to Denver Resurvey School during the 1900 Storm. “West End School located at Fiftieth Street and Avenue R on the site formerly occupied by the Denver Resurvey School was opened yesterday morning with an enrollment of sixty pupils according to an announcement by Al G. Littlejohn, superintendent of two teachers, Mrs. G. Barber and Maymie Schroeder were transferred to the new school which comprises at present two classrooms and which will by added to if the enrollment materially increases. The additional school was created for the Benefit of children residing in the grade raising area. But because of the difficulty which might be entailed on children get to in rating in the end additional fact. Littlejohn expressed satisfaction opening yesterday. Two at the ready Cut structures used previously to the school expansion program have been moved to the West site for the school children.”



 

However West End School was removed and demolished in 1927. Galveston Public Free Schools sent students attending West End School to Alamo Elementary School on the West End. So students attending West End School were transferred to the Alamo School.
