History behind Temple Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas explored.

Temple Baptist Church is one of the lesser known churches of San Antonio, Texas. This news article will explain what Temple Baptist Church is.


Temple Baptist Church was chartered and organized by David A Finley in 1967 as a domestic nonprofit corporation. Temple Baptist Church was renamed to Blanco Road Baptist Church in 1964. The church would use this name until 1968. The name reverted back to Temple Baptist Church in 1968. Temple Baptist Church had two locations which were 8603 Huebner Road and 702 Morningview Drive. Temple Baptist Church celebrated their 15th anniversary at 9:45 AM and at 6:30 PM on Saturday, June 12, 1971. News regarding the 15th anniversary of  Temple Baptist Church was published in the Express and News. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/29703273/)


However Temple Baptist Church was shut down by an act of forfeiture by the State of Texas in 1986 effectively putting an end to religious services. Temple Baptist Church would reopen in the Wheatley Heights neighborhood in 1989 at the intersection of Booker T Road and D Street (now Morningview Drive and Bookertee Road) at 702 D Street which is now 702 Morningview Drive. John M. Schaefer executed a real estate lien note payable to Texas Bank N.A. and Eric D. Sherer on a substitute trustee’s deed on the date of July 1, 1991. The property this church was located had been foreclosed by Texas Bank N.A. in 1997. Eric D. Sherer and Anthony W. Eugenio put the property up for public sale part of the terms of the foreclosure sale. The property was sold to FARMCO TRUST for $80,000 dollars. FARMCO TRUST was the highest bidder. Temple Baptist Church was re-established in 2001 and began being managed by Baptist Temple Church. (Ref: https://www.allbiz.com/business/temple-missionary-baptist-church_29I-210-359-7118)


2001 was the year Temple Baptist Church was renamed to Temple Missionary Baptist Church and had moved back to Morningview Drive in the Wheatley Heights neighborhood. This time Temple Baptist Church would be located further down across the street  from their former location after a man named Robert L. Bratcher (Robert Louis Bratcher) sold the land to Temple Missionary Baptist Church on a warranty deed that year. Their new location was 745 Morningview Drive. Temple Missionary Baptist Church was re-established again in 2008 and was still being managed by Baptist Temple Church at the same location. Interestingly enough Temple Missionary Baptist Church was not recognized under a group. (Ref: https://texas-biz.com/co/temple-missionary-baptist-church-1)
