History of La Salle Park in San Antonio, Texas explored and explained. (Revisited)

La Salle Park was a tiny park located in the Southtown neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas at one point in time. La Salle Park is one of San Antonio’s forgotten parks. This park was also known as LaSalle Park. This news article will explain and explore the history behind La Salle Park.

La Salle Park was a tiny park located in the Southtown neighborhood about a distance of 2 miles from downtown. This park was located on a 10 x 10 foot lot which was a 10 x 10 lot. A handful of palm trees surrounded the perimeter of La Salle Park. No shrubbery was found in this park as a maintenance team would often mow the grass. The land where La Salle Park was originally located was first owned by S H Gowdy and W W Rushmore. S H Gowdy and W W Rushmore purchased this small parcel of land around 1910. S H Gowdy deeded their land to Mrs. Fannie Frankenstein and Louis Frankenstein on a transfer of judgement deed on 12/7/1921. However Louis Frankenstein passed away on November 5, 1919. So their was put in an estate called the estate of Louis Frankenstein. Mrs. Fannie Frankenstein was an administratrix for the estate of Louis Frankenstein. Mrs. Fannie Frankenstein deeded their land to S H Gowdy. (Ref: Bexar County Land Deeds, Volume 17, Pages 277-279)

Solly Frankenstein (Sol Frankenstein) seeked out an affidavit with help from the state of Indiana on June 5, 1926. Solly Frankenstein was the son of Louis Frankenstein from his second marriage with Hannah Katzenberg. (Ref: Bexar County Land Deeds, Volume 897, Pages 64 & 65)

During that same year, Fannie Frankenstein filed a court case called a lis pendens against Solly Frankenstein for trespass to try title and for damages brought by plaintiff against the defendants for the title and possession of real estate. Solly Frankenstein was a plaintiff in this court case. (Ref: Bexar County Land Deeds, Volume 4, Page 39)

On the date of August 12, 1965, the City of San Antonio approved the Civic Center Project for construction of HemisFair Park. The City of San Antonio city-owned parcels La Salle Park and Moses Park as land donations amount to a cost of $9,500 dollars. La Salle Park was a city-owned parcel at that the time which was given away as a land donation. This was done for the Urban Renewal Agency’s Urban Renewal Project and Civic Center Project for HemisFair Park. However La Salle Park was not affected by construction of I 37 (Interstate 37) from 1965 to 1967 interestingly enough. No trace of La Salle Park exists anymore. La Salle Park is now home to HemisFair Park.
