Spring Garden School was designed by Irwin Thornton Catharine and built in 1927. Construction for this school lasted for a year. The Spring Garden School first opened in 1928 as Spring Garden School No. 1 in the Poplar neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the 1927-1928 school year. Three bay bricks were used for this three-story Moderne-style building. Its interiors are filled with decorative limestone tile. 3 additional classrooms were added in the 1930s. Spring Garden School No. 1 was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
Philadelphia Public School District abandoned this school after a statewide budget crisis the effected the city’s school district in 2013. Spring Garden School was one of the 13 schools Philadelphia Public School District closed during the 2013 statewide budget crisis that effected Pennsylvania.
Today the Spring Garden School sits vacant and abandoned. Vandalism such as graffiti inside has occurred.
