Fort Worden was established in the late 1890s. Construction for Fort Worden began in 1897. Fort Worden used a fortification system designed to prevent a hostile fleet from reaching such targets as the Bremerton Naval Yard and the cities of Seattle, Tacoma and Everett. Fort Worden is named after Rear Admiral John L. Worden.
The Fort Worden was transferred to the Coast Artillery for use in January 10, 1912 at a total cost of $207,832.50. The fort was closed in 1953 and was purchased as a state park in 1955. Today the State of Washington State and US Government own and maintain Fort Worden.
Fort Worden is located at 200 Battery Way, Port Townsend, Washington, US 98368.
