The Titan - Basement Tapes 2004-2015 album is a compilation of songs Titan recorded from the year 2004 all the way to 2015. Most of these songs were not for any specific album. This album was issued on cassette only. If you enjoy the sounds of Esham, EC Illa, or The Dayton Family, then you will surely enjoy this album. He uses a goofy squeaky voice when rapping throughout much of this album.
There is a lot of pain inside of these songs. You can hear the pain in the lyrics. He vented all the pain he kept bottled up. This album is personal to Titan. He did something completely different and had changed his style towards a more hip hop sound. He was trying to break free from the gangsta rap sound along with the horrorcore acid rap sound he made with King Hood Cykoz and Deuce 11 G’z.
The song Deadmate is laced with heavy bass that will definitely rattle your speakers. Headphone wearers, you have been warned! Heavy bass might damage your speakers. The beats on Deadmate were created by the legendary Mr. Boxxxcutta himself. Deadmate has a similar vibe to William Faulkner’s Emily Rose novel due to its gruesome foreboding vibe (parts of this song make reference to necrophilia).
Beyond doors of dreams is where horror lies. Titan brushed away the cobwebs being that there are several of them lying around. It’s been several months but you’ve never were forgotten. Now Titan takes us through the stone garden. In this stone garden is a grave plot.
A newspaper article lies right next the grave plot. He takes a picture of the newspaper article. It’s been a long time and Titan can’t take in the sadness and devastation anymore. He is feeling sad and blue since his baby left Earth.
The newspaper clipping Titan Graham is referring to is reflecting upon the death of Yolanda Renee Cotton shown on the front album cover.
The newspaper clipping was a report on the death of North Carolina woman named Yolanda Renee Cotton who was found shot to death in her own house. Fernando Terrazas Ceja shot Yolanda Renee Cotton several times before leaving her for dead. Yolanda Renee Cotton of Charlotte, North Carolina died on September 13, 2005. Cotton’s homicide was the 64th homicide Charlotte-Meckleburg Police investigated in 2005. The cause of her death was a case of domestic violence. She had a disagreement between her and her ex-boyfriend.
Officers eventually later apprehended Fernando Terrazas Ceja. Fernando Terrazas Ceja was an illegal alien who jumped the border of Mexico (US-Mexico border) to get into the United States. Her death contributed to another killing led by an illegal alien.
Time is running out. Titan is well aware of this. It’s a pity. Life has gotten colder. Things haven’t been the same. That is that the following verse means: “Time is running out/This my last chance” Yolanda was trying to move on as she was drowned in emotions.
The lyrics “cold case, cold case, cold case/I’ve got another cold case/I miss my deadmate” are what give this song a cold chilling effect along with the mood and bass.
Don't Wanna Live was song written by Titan in 1997 after his time in the long forgotten rap group King Hood Cykoz. Don't Wanna Live is a song that deals with suicide. Titan tells the story of his life in music and how sometimes he doesn’t want to live.
The vocals used on Don't Wanna Live sound very futuristic and not something you would expect to hear from a song that was written or recorded in 1997. His vocals are electronically boosted using some sort of electro-synthesizer with hints of distortion.
At the very beginning of the song, a woman asks “Do you ever think about suicide?” This vocal sample appears to from a movie. The question she asked is disturbing and thought-provoking.
Back in 1991 is when Titan Kill-A-Gram was writing killer raps with Leathaface. They would write rhymes in the back of the classroom. This was when him and DJ Clay were making tapes. DJ Clay was a hustler back then. If only nonbelievers could see him. Titan brags about how people should see him now.
Marcus Steele had visions of jumping into Niagara Falls. His life was going into a downward spiral. It’s no wonder Titan keeps going under. If you wanna know why he wants to die, the reason why he wants to die is because he does not want to live anymore.
Go back to sleep. Titan will wake you up for your funeral. But first say a prayer for his demo. His demo is “too real” for record deals. “No rules. No screwz.” Titan does his thing in a genuine old school manner. Picture him gone with a suicidal tendency. He looked in the kitchen door and all that was there was sarane wrap. Can’t imagine that? Picture this. Him strangled by a microphone cable.
Fuck a platinum plaque. Titan’s down with those maniacs in King Hood better known as the King Hood Cykoz. Such as Maniac, Leathaface, Randy, and Lunatic for instance. Don’t make him crack. He’ll get blood on his shoelaces. Morbid thoughts continue. He’s been haunted by morbid thoughts in his bedroom.
The demo Titan is referring to was his first solo album that was recorded on cassette at Boomin Studios off of Dort Highway in Flint, Michigan in the year of 1993. His album was set to be released on Boomin Records in the same year. However his debut album was never released due to the popularity geared towards Ruff N Rugged.
“No rules. No screwz.” was a quote from the song Don’t Wanna Live which is a reference to a song from his 1993 demo cassette called No Screwz.
Downing These Pillz is a depressing love song with a sad mood. The whole song is a painful confession and a testament to the pain he is experiencing.
Downing These Pillz was a song inspired by the horror film Dawn of The Dead. A quote from the Romero Zombie horror film Dawn of The Dead plays at the very beginning. “Dude. Everybody’s dead. Your mom’s dead. Your brother’s dead. That fat chick at Dairy Queen.”
Caressed and depressed. Living life on a stretcher. In and out of sleep. Titan acknowledges his depression state. The phone won’t ring. He tried calling Tammy. But Tammy now has a family. She works at a chemical dependency center. He’s just a fiend. She moved out of town. That caused Titan to be depressed. He downs some Vicatin wishing that his would end. He’ll never find another one like her.
Life has turned ugly. It feels like nothing ever matters too much. There’s no real him. He’s simply not there. Titan asks for forgiveness for being lost. That is what these lyrics mean “Forgive me for being lost” . Downing these pills got him lost. He gets into thinking about suicide.
Much Too Much is quite similar to an East Coast freestyle rap in terms of sound quality. You’ve got the hiss in the background, reduced treble, and heavy boom bap beats. The hiss and boom bap beats give away that East Coast sound.
Titan does not have time to play around with people. The rap industry is so dead to him. He is a ghostwriter. He’s a zombie of this rap game. Ready or not, he stays down until the very end.
Confessions was a song Titan had written in 2013. The song uses a looped piano sample over a faded beat. This song uses a more Southern rap oriented sound. He uses a goofy squeaky voice when rapping on this song as he does much throughout this album. There is a theme of hopelessness on this song. The whole song is a painful confession.
There is a lot of pain inside of this songs. You can hear the pain in the lyrics. He vented all the pain he kept bottled up. Titan gets very emotional on this song. It was a more personal song of his.
The words “mama please” are repeated several times. He asks his mom for help as he can’t breathe. He needs help seeing in order to find his way. Titan is loosing his sanity. Holding on is something he is unable to manage. Several times throughout the track is where he asks for help. He ended up in a cycle of hopelessness. Life is hurting him. Titan is loosing everything he could hold onto. He realizes he is going nowhere.
The song Killa is surprisingly calming given its title. The song uses a calming electronic keyboard piano which follows a repeated melody which is looped. However the tempo is not too slow. This song was recorded on a tape dub machine.
Titan talks about how he never ate bath salts before. Bath salts remind him of an old movie. He used to get hungry when he saw bath salts. His cuisine consists of eating bath salts and people. Salt and pepper are sprinkled on. References to cannibalism are made.
Help Me is a song which is a testament to his pain. There is a lot of pain inside of this song. You can hear the pain in the lyrics. He vented all the pain he kept bottled up. Titan gets very emotional on this song. It was a more personal song of his.
However the song has a cool vibe. Similar to Nirvana but with bass and a beat machine. The song was produced and programmed by Killa Keith.
The song How We Do has a more East Coast rap/hip hop sound similar to the song Much Too Much and the song Don’t Be Sad. The sample used and beats give this away. Titan recorded this song in 2009 on a tape deck recorder.
Titan discusses how we all want to be free in the lap of luxury. Being free is what people want. Maybe then we won’t be our own nightmare. Money and growing pains give him gray hair. The sky is the limit to what we can achieve in life. Everything is everything.
We Are The Dead is a dope song which is a freestyle. Sort of an impromptu rap.
Be Quiet uses a more Southern rap oriented sound. The crisp thin beats indicate this. Laced over these beats are heavy bass. Overall the vibe is eerie.
Don’t Be Sad is an instrumental that has an East Coast hip hop sound to it perfect for the freestylers to rap over. Notice the piano used? The instrumental is jazz influenced. Many East Coast hip hop songs use jazz samples to rap over or freestyle.
Titan raps similarly to Shaggy 2 Dope from ICP on the song Ambrosia. Ambrosia is quite a quirky song.
I rate this album 4/5****!
