Rinard Cemetery. An Austin cemetery in a strange location.

Rinard Cemetery is one of the most forgotten cemeteries of Travis County and Austin. Not much is known about Rinard Cemetery. Not much history and documentation of Rinard Cemetery has been preserved at all.

Rinard Cemetery established northwest of Creedmoor, Texas sometime possibly during the 1880s. The exact year of when this cemetery was plotted and established is unknown. The cemetery was plotted just 1 mile west of the Carl Cemetery approximately 2 miles south of Rinard Road. Travis County had fenced off Rinard Cemetery not long afterwards. Rinard Cemetery was established to serve the communities of Bluff Springs, Carl, Austin, and Creedmoor.

According to the description from Travis Central Appraisal District (TCAD), the lot size of Rinard Cemetery is 1 acre. The legal description is as follows: ABS 24 DELVALLE S ACR 1.00. (Ref: http://propaccess.traviscad.org/clientdb/Property.aspx?prop_id=351861)

The exact time period of when Rinard Cemetery was abandoned is unknown. But somehow this cemetery managed to become abandoned and neglected for many decades.

According to Travis County land records, Texas Disposal Systems purchased the Rinard Cemetery property in 1992. Because Texas law prohibits destruction of cemeteries by businesses and homeowners, Texas Disposal Systems had installed a fence around the perimeter of Rinard Cemetery to insure protection and cease destruction. They became groundskeepers and caretakers for this cemetery the same year.

Gravestones to these burial broke over time from time and weather. Rinard Cemetery is a symbol and example of rural decay. That is why all of the gravestones are broken and not intact. Some of the burials could have been relocated to Carl Cemetery when Texas Disposal Systems was creating their landfills back in the early 90s.

Today Rinard Cemetery is owned by Texas Disposal Systems. Rinard Cemetery is maintained by Texas Disposal Systems. Rinard Cemetery is located on private property and permission must be obtained by Texas Disposal Systems employees at their office. Only the fence remains. Rinard Cemetery was located at 11114 Rinard Road, Austin, Texas, US 78747.

  1. Have you visited what is called Rinard Cemetery?" I understand not all the markers are "broken and not intact."
