This is Michael Mixerr. Today I will review The Depot by Less Than Zro. This was released on Big Heavy Records in 1993. (Big Heavy Records is not be confused with NOLA music distributor Big Easy.) The album was recorded and mixed at U Be U Studios in Saginaw, Michigan.
Less Than Zro is Saginaw's version BDP as Kaos & Mystro were Detroit's version of BDP except Less Than Zro is a more gangsta version of BDP! Kaos & Mystro were Detroit's answer to Boogie Down Productions. Less Than Zro were Saginaw's answer to Boogie Down Productions.
Nickel Plated is a song about how Trigger Man D is selling B-52 to fiends in the city of Saginaw which is a city full of fiends. Dopefiends that is! Trigger Man D explains the details of his drug dealing and prostitution ring while in the city of Saginaw. Trigger Man D is a nigga that his mother is always cursing profanities about. His father died from the same shit Trigger Man D is yelling out. The song Nickel Plated isn't about 24 inch rims that rappers be rappin' about nowadays. So don't get it twisted. Ya dig? Other than that, Trigger Man D sounds a lot like KRS-ONE on this track. In fact, Nickel Plated samples BDP - House Niggas and has that U BE U Studios sound to it.
Mind of a Gangsta is within the mindset of a gangsta from Saginaw, Michigan. It's about dope dealing, destruction of property, possession of stolen property, and disorderly conduct. As I said Less Than Zro is a more gangsta version of BDP! That's all I need to say.
Around The Crib is about life at home in the hood. It's about life in the hood really. Growing up, playing games, having fun, cop shoot outs, drug raids, shooting dice, and cooking food. However it isn't all good in the hood. There's violence, drugs, crime, mischief, and mayhem.
I rate this album, The Depot, 4/5****!
