Mateo & Matos - Selective Styles single review

Mateo & Matos - Selective Styles is one of the more disco oriented releases from Mateo & Matos yet they still incorporated the sounds of house music on this single. All of these songs are upbeat house songs perfect for the dance floor or lounge. This is yet another overshadowed single to have been released from the genre of electronic music.

The Voyage is the opener for Selective Styles and uses beats filled such intensity. The bongos are added into those intense beats you hear on this song. The set Mateo & Matos uses is hot and intense. Now that vocal sample give The Voyage a disco flavor.

So Let It "Shine On" uses a small handful of samples, chords, and disco synths. Disco meets house on this song hence the fast uptempo beats and intensity. So Let It "Shine On" uses the same structure as these songs.: Brass Construction - Happy People, Cheek ‎– Venus (Sunshine People), and DJ Space And Moore - Soultrap People. That is no coincidence as So Let It "Shine On" samples Brass Construction - Happy People.

One More Time is the closer for Selective Styles. The song uses funky windy bass from a synthesizer over house beats.

Platinum Hook ‎– Platinum Hook album review

Platinum Hook ‎– Platinum Hook is a funky disco album that has that platinum touch. The Motown sound of the 70s left much for the ears to be desired. Platinum Hook plays wonders whether doing a cover song or their own original songs. Highlights from this album include Standing On The Verge (Of Getting It On), Hotline, Gotta Find A Woman, 'Til I Met You

Standing On The Verge (Of Getting It On) uses a blend of P-Funk and disco. The horns chase each other during the bridge. The funky bass line and horns are what make this song inexplicably stand out. The song is a slightly faster cover of Funkadelic - Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On. Platinum Hook’s cover of this song is fantastic.

Hotline is driven by a Parliament-Funkadelic styled horn selection over a drum kit. That is where the P-Funk element comes from.

Gotta Find A Woman is an example of perfect modern Motown soul from the 1970s. The song was serious underrated and overlooked for its time. The song uses one funky ass bass line. The long version of this song is the best version.

'Til I Met You is a mellow song which calms the mood down for this album. The song has a jazzy feel due to the saxophone and piano which are used. Jazz meets the sounds of soul music and disco on 'Til I Met You in a romantic manner. Not surprising since this is a song about romance. The song is about sweet love. You’ve never had a love so sweet until you’ve heard this song.

Lover What You've Done (To Me) is a mellow song with a vibe similar to 'Til I Met You.

Platinum Hook ‎– Ecstasy Paradise album review

Platinum Hook ‎– Ecstasy Paradise is an unreleased Motown album that only got issued as a test pressing on vinyl. Possibly for radio stations and music critics. Sadly Motown decided not to release this album because the disco era had come to an end by 1980 and a lack of charting singles. Disco was no longer popular and R&B/soul was already becoming a trending genre. The entire album is definitely funky.

Light As A Feather is funky disco instrumental backed with several layers of instrumentation. The horn selection, bongos, guitars, synthesizers, and keyboards. Horn selection helps this song prosper and stand out. Tongue clicking adds into the funky 70s disco sound. Listen closely.

Good to you is killer boogie funk. The song was a prime example of 80s funk that was coming from Detroit at the time this song was recorded.

Dancer is a funky groove and can do numbers on the dance floor. The song incorporates elements of dance, boogie, funk, and disco in one recording. Platinum Hook has that platinum touch when it comes to laying down the funk.

Trinidadian Deep is known for producing some of the best house music out there currently which is exactly what he did on the song Future Travels. For example, take how he blended the beach waves you hear at the beginning of the song in with distortion. The beach waves blend in perfectly with the lush light distortion. Kidd-X - The Unknown album review

Kidd-X - The Unknown one of the lesser known Bay Area rap albums that have been very much overlooked and overshadowed. The album leaned toward using a more East Coast rap sound than the usual West Coast rap sound that was prevalent and burgeoning in the Bay Area during that time. This album uses touches of jazz hop, jazz rap, and soul. We (Represent), Worse Thing In This World, No M.C. Has, M.C.’s, and Payback are examples of tracks that use samples from jazz songs and soul songs. Rap from San Jose tends to get overlooked as Bay Area rap fans tend to buy music from Oakland, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Vallejo, or Richmond. This album is one of those example of overlooked Bay Area rap albums.

Kidd-X rips MC’s to shreds on We (Represent) as he is on the prowl to take out wack MC’s. The song is about who is the baddest MC. Classic lyrical rap is what this song is. Plado from the Twisted Mind Kids contributes to the track with his vocals. We (Represent) samples Grover Washington, Jr - Tell Me About It Now.

Kidd-X on the prowl to rip MC’s to shreds. Especially wack MC’s. He also rips folks to shreds. He does not stop when he raps on the mic. You know who’s the baddest. He practices with his rhymes. That is how he gets better at rapping. His skills are dynamite. He’ll serve you something phat from your menu. A microphone is what he uses to rock the crowd.

Kidd-X is on the hunt for wack MC’s. He is about to break them down. Suckers are trying to burn him. How are they going to test him? Their knowledge is minimal. This makes him really mad. So he cuts them up like meat in a scullery.

Worst Thing In This World uses a mixture of jazz and hip hop. Kidd-X raps in an East Coast rough neck style as he kicks mad rhymes.

BHC ‎– Openin' Doors album review

BHC ‎– Openin' Doors was one of the best San Antonio rap album from 1997 that unfortunately got very much overlooked and became an under-appreciated classic. BHC made some noise in San Antonio back in the day with this debut album of theirs. The album had spawned local hits such as B.I.G.H.O.U.S.E., This Game, Down And Dirty, Let 'Em Know, and Pimp Swangin among other songs they had recorded. OG Tear Drop and Bo-Leg are what made this album a San Antonio legacy and hood classic. Southern rap meets gangsta rap and hardcore lyricism on this album. BHC is Big House Click.

Now the album’s artwork was designed by graphic design firm Pen N Pixel during the beginning of the bling era. Font used for the album title located at the very bottom was Impact in white bold letters in all capital letters. Those big white bold letters are what made the album cover iconic and eye-grabbing. That lady on the album cover is the homegirl Bo-Leg.

The album was produced by Donerick Rainey, Michael "Mykill" Ellison, and Rocc Lewis. Now Rocc Lewis was ahead of his time with the production. He was ahead of everyone else in the game.

This group, Too Hard Too Hype, Lethal T and The Outcast, Tribe 46, and PKO should have blown up nationwide. They had the perfect sound at that time as they were ahead of the rest. BHC had talent.

B.I.G.H.O.U.S.E. was the BHC (Big House Click) anthem for 1997 and a hood single which soon enough got radio play on 96.1 FM Radio. B.I.G.H.O.U.S.E. became an instant hood classic. The song incorporated heavy hitting beats and a hardcore lyrical presence. Bo-Leg’s verse was the tightest.

BHC is giving up the funk for the fucking funk lovers. You busters better recognize that you are not above BHC. BHC are hustlers in the game of rapping and soldiers on these streets. They from the city where carjackings are commonplace. Big House meets at their big house for a 7 o’clock meeting tonight. They are getting down like LL Cool J.

Tear Drop’s weapon is a .357 Smith & Wesson. His weapon will teach you hoes a lesson if you ever try to fuck with him. You will lose your life if you ever try to fuck with him. If you put his trust in him, he will put you trust in you. Trust is a big thing in this game called life. Down for whatever. From selling drugs to prostitution is how he makes his cash even that is sinful.

Bo-Leg is coming up on this scene. Everyone better recognize. She is about to hit a lick (commit a robbery). She puts a chrome to your mother’s mouth. You don’t ever want to step to this click.

BHC lets you know this game is from them to you on the song This Game.  The song is about staying true to your hustle and and handling your business. BHC made some noise with this posse cut back in the day.

This Game was another one their songs that became an instant hood classic. Tear Drop and the rest of BHC made this song a classic with their lyrics and rhymes. The song is laced with a sinister mischievous piano. The beats and piano section were definitely ahead the time.

Tear Drop drops the best lyrics that rhyme during the Verse 1 right at the very beginning. This is a classic style of rapping. That is how Tear Drop made this song a classic.

One, two, coming at you with a knockout flow
And I got more flow than the Mississippi River, hoe
And I stay on point like a needle you can get on these
The Big House Click
We got more mack than macaroni mixed with cheese
And little bitch, please
You don’t ever want to fuck with me, hoe
Because I’ve got more game than the game Nintendo 64

Tear Drop is also quick with the gunplay as he can pull out his gun quickly on anyone. That’s how quick he is with a gun.

Read these lyrics to gain a better understanding:

And fool, I’m quick when it comes down to this trigger, loc
Straight blasting on niggaz between they eyes like I’m on gun smoke
That’s that on the one
Really doe
You don’t ever want to step to this click

Tear Drop is having things like Big Mike by stacking his paper and keeping his ends with dividends. That’s what he likes. He’ll stay true to this game forever and not snitch to law enforcement. Because this game is from him to you.

This game is from me to you. No matter what type of hustle. You gotta get it while the getting is good. Never take no shorts or no losses. Never let them trash talk your hood. Don’t get this game misunderstood.

Duk Duk Goose is one of their darker more gangsta songs off the album. The song is about killing people. The song Duk Duk Goose in 1996.

Tear Drop talks about how his kinfolk got smoked on the 15th of January. Everybody was screaming suicide. That was everyone except Tear Drop and his family. They were not about to let that shit ride. It’s ride or die regardless of weather. Revenge is their mind. His mind if filled with a lot of grief.

Bo-Leg is a threat to your health. She hustles for her ends and doesn’t need anyone to pay her debt. She breaks us off some examples of this rap shit. That .9 chrome will placed against your fucking head. She blow anyone’s head off if they approach her or come her way. These snitching ass niggas believe they can get close to BHC. Caps get pealed if she has to. That is because can’t nobody fade Bo-Leg.

Openin' Doors is another one of their classics which got overlooked unfortunately. This song became a hood classic instantly too. Mr. Lo goes round for round with his rhymes and lyrics on this BHC song. It’s a no holds barred type of song as he does not hold back. Him and BHC were opening doors with this song.

Mr. Lo’s rhymes are the tightest on this song. He goes pound for pound, round for round with his lyrics and premeditated flows. Now these are simplistic rhymes of course. Here are some examples below.

Here we go
Tippy toe
Silly hoes better get it down
Ready to clown
Look at my frown
Breaking off niggaz with a gang of sounds
Pound for pound, round for round
Look at me now
Don’t you hate it?
Premeditated flows in my mind

BHC lets niggas know about Texas and how things are down there on the song Lettin' Nigga's Know. Tear Drop rap throughout most of the song. The song is about killing people also.

Tear Drop is hitting switches in his ride on his block on the South Side of San Antonio. He is strapped with a .9 millimeter glock. Haters want to take his belongings. So he prepares himself to commit a 211 (robbery). He has to commit a 211 quick as his life depends on it. The Big House Click is too tight. He can’t have ends if he is constantly spending money. That’s how he is teaching game to his young g’s in San Antonio. Back in the day, Denver Heights was his favorite stomping grounds. He is straight kicking flows.

Tear Drop is working his way from the bottom to the top of the charts as he flexes his skills as a poet with his poetry. He just can’t wait to get back on the cuts. It’s all about that paper.

BHC can’t believe this. These snitching ass niggas believe they can get close to BHC. The song Down And Dirty explains how BHC keeps their distance from snitches by being down and dirty. Down And Dirty is another one of their classics which got overlooked unfortunately. The song is a classic jam off the Openin' Doors album. The song is also a favorite among BHC fans.

Mr. Lo’s rhymes are the tightest on this song. His rhymes are used in the style of Twista during Verse 1. Here are some examples: “Crippin’ with the weed/Rolling with the speed” and  “Playas with the heat/Fuck enemies”.

This rhyme is one of  Mr. Lo’s tightest rhymes on Verse 1.

Bo-Leg is down
Lo’s finna clown
Take whatever you busters got
Yeah, I’ve done it
Took your nuggets
Rings and even your Rolex watch
Hopped out the spot
Shit’s getting hot

BHC can’t believe this. These snitching ass niggas believe they can get close to BHC. Do you believe that?

Mr. Lo is crippin’ with the weed and rolling with the speed. BHC are playas with the heat. Fuck enemies. The Hennessy has gone down fast. So realize who you’re fucking with. Bo-Leg is down and Mr. Lo is finna clown. Mr. Lo is going to take what ever you busters got. Yeah, he’s done it. He has taken your nuggets, your rings,  and even your Rolex watch. Suddenly he hopped out of the spot as shit’s getting hot.

Mr. Lo fired up the erb. Him and his kinfolk are smoking erb on the curb. They head to the store for some Newport cigarettes in a Coupe. They use Newport cigarettes to calm their nerves. Fools talk shit. So it’s for Mr. Lo to clown them. He also kills people too. He kills people by doing a 187.

The song South Side copies a DJ Screw styled beat that appears to have been chopped and screwed. Overall the song follows the chopped and screwed sound & style. The entire song is dedicated to the South Side of San Antonio.

BHC ‎– Crime Pays album review

BHC ‎– Crime Pays is another San Antonio rap album unfortunately got very much overlooked and became an under-appreciated classic. BHC made some noise in San Antonio back in the day with this album also as  this album had spawned local hits such as Game Tight, Ride Tonight, Drama,  and Ride Tonight among other songs they had recorded. Southern rap meets gangsta rap and lyricism on this album.

You can hear the progression of style from their debut album to their second album on Crime Pays. They definitely had improved on their sophomore album Crime Pays. Mr. Lo uses more sophisticated lyrics in his raps and lyrics.

However the only thing missing from this album is Bo-Leg. There is a lack of Bo-Leg’s presence on this BHC album for some reason. She is not as vocal on this album as she was on BHC’s debut album. Also Mr. Lo has more the spotlight on this album than he did on the debut album. He is on a lot more of the songs as he raps more.

Now the album’s artwork was designed by graphic design firm Pen N Pixel during the bling era. Fonts used for this album were Stencil and Songti TC. The orange BHC letters are what made the album cover iconic and eye-grabbing.

Guest artists on this album include Lil Keke, C-Loc, and Happy Perez. The album was produced by Donerick Rainey, Happy Perez, John Moran, and Rocc Lewis.

Game Tight was one of their singles which featured Baton Rouge rapper C-Loc and was an underground favorite for many. Game Tight was one of their singles which got radio play on 96.1 FM back in the day. BHC and C-Loc prove how they are game tight and who is the better rapper. It’s man vs. man here.

Who is going down with the kings of game? Going out with a bang. 5 cats are in the ring. BHC is riding through the South Side of San Antonio acting real bad. They are going to shine in this rap game. They are on another level in this rap game. This is all factual. C-Loc and BHC let this be known to everyone.

Tear Drop is a hustler from San Antonio. His shiny chrome will back you ass up off him. Mr. Lo is not your average fellow. His sound is smooth.

Tear Drop asks the haters why they are hating on him in the song Why You Hatin’. The concept of this song revolves around jealousy. The song is backed by a selection of rhythmic bongos with fast paced lyrics and a fast tempo.

Tear Drop asks haters why they are hating on him. Haters seem to be fascinated with talking bad and talking down on him. They waiting to see if he will slip and fall.

However Tear Drop stands tall like a soldier. He tells us that we are all in the same gang. You know how the game goes. Don’t hate the player. There ain’t no hating in his family or his faculty. Or in BHC.

Haters can’t stand to see a person be true. Haters are simpleminded motherfuckers that can’t stand on their feet. Them hoes is weak.

Mr. Lo is flipping scrilla stacks and making noise. He ain’t tripping on no one. Bitches say shit all the time. Shit like that makes Mr. Lo mad. Y’all can’t fade Mr. Lo. He lets us know this in advance. He stays to himself most of the time.

Tear Drop cuts no slack. From playa haters to niggas trying to pull a jack move. His paper stacks are so thick to the point where you cannot even hold them in your hand. All the money from his work is kept securely in a safe. That is how his money is safe. Here are some wise words from OG Tear Drop; If you are born in the game, the game will fit you like a glove.

BHC and Lil Keke are going to ride tonight on the track Ride Tonight. Here Ride Tonight is a fast paced uptempo Southern rap song.

They are going to ride tonight because they are feeling so tight. Grab that drank and Newport. They are steady stacking and making bank. BHC and Lil Keke are hustlers as they are all on the block. Watch your back as haters want to see you fail. Watch your mouth. Sounds from the Big House are coming strong.

Lil Keke has the rich nigga drugs. He has the syrup and top flight. He also has the Hennessy and Sprite. Lil Keke and BHC bring the high. How do y’all want it? What you waitin’ on? This song is not for the fake people out there.

BHC teaches us exactly how crime pays on the song Crime Pays. They say crime pays in many ways. Ironically the song got radio play on 96.1 FM back in the day despite the song’s title. BHC proves how they are game tight and down for their crimes against humanity and not just necessarily crimes against nature. This was an underground favorite for many.

Crime pays in many different ways. In so many different ways people do not understand or comprehend. From playa haters to niggas trying to pull a jack move and even killings.

The song Drama is similar to the King 13 song Midnight Drama. BHC could have been influenced by the King 13 song when they recorded Drama. The song Drama uses a combination of freestyle rap and gangsta rap.
