DTK Posse - Gettin Major album review

DTK Posse - Gettin Major is a jazz rap album where the sounds of old school jazz meet rap and hip hop. This is evident on tracks such as Rapp Star and Gettin’ Major. A touch of old school funk is added to songs such as Nasty Rock, Run Up, and Rapp Star. Each song is filled with battle raps.

DTK Posse - Gettin Major was released when nearly everyone in Flint was in a rap group back in the 90s. This tape got overshadowed due to the popularity of gangsta rap that was burgeoning at that time. Success from artists such as MC Breed, Jake The Flake, DFC, Top Authority, The Dayton Family, and Project Born is what led to be overshadowed. A.L.E., Kool Chief, and Gerald Valentine of RFTW were responsible for producing some of the songs.

The concept of the album cover was based on ancient Greek scriptures which is why you have characters and hieroglyphs such as ∆ and Ω present. Notice how the yellow the ancient Greek scripture is due to aging and antiquity. The second paragraph of the scripture (II) is related to the fifth paragraph (V) because never forgetting where you came form is part of being true to the game and not selling out. So never forget where you came from and be true to the game. No sell out. The second paragraph and the fifth paragraph are about staying true to yourself.  The second paragraph and the fifth paragraph are a part of the DTK Law (DTK Laws).

A jazzy grand piano is used all over the place on Gettin’ Major given that those jazzy grand piano notes and chords are a looped sample. That jazzy grand piano is what makes Gettin’ Major a jazz rap song. Gettin’ Major is about getting respect in a major way on a larger scale.  Now DTK Posse is in effect demanding respect and are getting major. DTK Posse was getting major in the 93.

Growing up young in the projects (government subsidized housing) in a city full of danger, a nigga like T-uan had to do what was necessary to gain respect. He knew everyone that lived in the projects. Every once and while he would attend a house party. A nigga could get no skins because a nigga had no cash. He grew up hard in a city filled with danger called Flint, Michigan. Flint, Michigan is a city full of and still is filled with danger. T-uan was a little motherfucker with a body full of anger. He’s gotten himself a reputation even though he hasn’t committed any crimes. T-uan could not find a job or get any type of employment. So he devoted himself to a style of music known as rhythm and poetry better known as rap. He hooked up with some niggas out of Flint and formed the DTK Posse. Every time T-uan drops a rhyme, it’s guaranteed to be a hit. Now DTK Posse is in effect demanding respect and are getting major. DTK Posse was getting major in the 93.

A.L.E. was a young nigga coming up running around with the DTK Posse earning money. They have each others backs because posse comes first. A.L.E. is cold motherfucker worse than a Freddy Krueger nightmare. He stalks the parks and projects. So don’t let your ass get caught after dark. He feels no remorse for his actions. You would think A.L.E. worked for the mob the way he plays people. But no, instead he is getting major.

T-uan is getting fat like that as he keeps going and going. He is flowing as there is money to make. He has records to sell. Taking MC’s out on the stage is what he does.

After 10 years on the mic, A.L.E. finally gets a chance to rock the stage. He is getting hype on the stage. Giving up is something he’s never done. Giving up is not an option for him. Those rhymes of his shock people. Being true to the game is what DTK Posse. Only suckers sell out.

Nasty Rock is a funk rap song backed by a bouncy funky guitar reminiscent of a James Brown song or a Little Richard song. You can feel a live presence due to the audience cheering in the background. One has to wonder if this song was recorded live. This track hyped on the dance floor of the COPA on a Saturday night. Nasty Rock is a song dedicated to the city of Flint.

DTK Posse in is the house for 93. DTK Posse is in effect. Their rhymes are clever, cool, and stunning due to their style. There’s no talking. Just freaking on the dance floor at COPA Nightclub if you can find room. Their dope rhymes rock the dance floor.

Rapp Star is a funky jazz rap song backed by a bouncy funky guitar and a jazzy saxophone. This is 90’s jazz rap at its finest. Rapp Star samples the 1978 song Teddy Pendergrass - Close the Door and Joey Lapidos - Batman: Stacked Cards (Beginning). Rapp Star was produced by Gerald Valentine of RFTW. The song is about all the escapades A.L.E. gets himself with women into as a rap star.

A.L.E. had seen this vision of a beauty. So he felt it was his duty to walk over to her to get more than her phone number. She was more than a booty. A.L.E. asks if he can talk to her. This beauty is named Pam. She was thicker than molasses. She was like a beauty queen. A.L.E. tells Pam he is a rap star.

After conversating with Pam, he got back to the mall to meet up with the fellas. He heard this fly voice say hello. She had her eyes covered so he was unable to identify the voice. The smell of her perfume gave her identity away. A.L.E. figured out who she was. She was Michelle. They get into fooling around explicitly with each other. However they get into a disagreement between each other. So A.L.E. stepped up to another mademoiselle. Her name was Nicki. She gave a good quickie.

His game was slick. His mission was complete. So he headed back to the streets to go out making for more hoes. A.L.E. is headed for Saginaw Street. He saw this pretty young thing taking a walk. So he strolls on over. Her name was Sheryl.

Cross Fire is a cautionary tale telling people not to get caught up in gun play and to stay away from violence.  So don’t get caught in the line of a cross fire. This is one of the more violent songs on the album. The song uses a rich jazzy piano sample over hip hop beats.

2 In Rhythm ‎– 2 In Rhythm EP review

2 In Rhythm ‎– 2 In Rhythm EP is one of the lesser known Chicago hard house EPs that got overlooked yet is somehow well remembered. This EP included the extremely hard to find original version of Acid Wash. Acid house meets the sounds of hard house on this EP. This 12" vinyl is extremely rare. This entire 2 In Rhythm EP was written and produced by Chris Chudzik aka Too Kool Chris.

Space Invaders is an amazing hard house song filled with Chicago styled hypeness. Super thick synths and thick drum programming. One thing that stands out about this 2 In Rhythm song is the loudness.

This EP includes the extremely hard to find original version of Acid Wash. The original version of Acid Wash came out on Trax Records sub label Housetime in 1989. Acid Wash was written and produced by Chris Chudzik aka Too Kool Chris. Chicago hard house at its finest.

Sweeter is a Chicago hard house remake of Eurhythmics - Sweet Dreams. You will remember this song from back in the days with the kool house vibe from Too Kool Chris as he got deep into the Chicago vibe.

Daniël Leseman ‎– On The Fritz EP EP review

Daniël Leseman ‎– On The Fritz EP is one of the most amazing and overlooked deep house electronic EPs to have from The Netherlands! The music is amazing and has that warm deep house sound. Each song is worth the listen. Songs as On The Fritz and Time To Go are perfect to play in a lounge.

On The Fritz has a sick chill vibe due to the amazing beats and drums. Those infectious handclaps and kicks are what make this song a beauty worth listening to. Daniël Leseman mastered the reverb on this song perfectly. Daniel's signature wobbly warpy synths definitely will put you into a daze.

Now what stands out particularly about the song Time To Go is Daniel's signature wobbly warpy synths. Daniel's signature wobbly warpy synths are so stratospheric, warm, ethereal, and calming. Those infectious handclaps and kicks are what make this song a beauty worth listening to as well as those synths. Perfect to play in a lounge.

The song Drums has Daniel's signature wobbly warpy synths and memorable groove. Many Daniël Leseman fans compare this song to a Detroit Swindle song.

Legend Lady J ‎– 2 Hot 2 Handle album review

Legend Lady J ‎– 2 Hot 2 Handle is one Memphis rap album that is too hard to handle for anyone. The album has that deep dark Memphis sound raps fans truly desire and yearn for. Songs such as Hollar, Hollar, Its The 90s, and 2 Hot 2 Handle showcase her skilled and creative lyrics. You have your club music songs such as This The Bump, Click, Click, Bang, Bang, and Jealous Ass Hoes which slightly unusual for a Memphis rap album.

Click, Click, Bang, Bang with King JC and Lil Jay is your typical No Limit style New Orleans rap song with a dark Memphis rap twist added with dark synths, thick beats, and heavy bass. The typical Memphis style. The lyrics are not as creative though.

2 Hot 2 Handle is one Memphis rap song that is too hard to handle for anyone. The song has that deep dark Memphis sound raps fans truly desire and yearn for. This song displays her more sensual side and sexual side. Alizé is often mentioned throughout the song. The Legend Lady J would seductively croon about drinking Alizé with brandy before a sexual encounter. She's badass, very skilled, and creative. She proves to us that she is too hot to hand on 2 Hot 2 Handle.

Who Can You Trust? is a dark gangsta rap with that dark Memphis rap flavor. Of course the song is not as dubious as Where You At or Throw Your Hands Up. Lady J switches up her style on Hollar, Hollar. She transitions from using the typical Memphis style to the New Orleans style. Notice how the thick Southern twang is present in her vocals.

DJ Pinky and Lil Tino - Sounds of the South album review

DJ Pinky and Lil Tino - Sounds of the South is one of the most sought after Memphis rap cassettes. Everyone seems to be going after this tape. DJ Pinky produced the entire album himself. You can expect to hear those dark eerie Memphis sounds such as warped distorted eerie synths playing from a low budget keyboard and beats filled with loudness. Be aware that the audio quality is considered to be crappy as a low quality MP3 rip. This is Lil Tino's iconic tape.

DJ Pinky and Lil Tino turn out the sounds of the South on the song Tha Sounds Of Tha South. The song uses warped distorted eerie synths on a low budget keyboard over a loud barrage of explosions. DJ Pinky and Lil Tino come from the south side of Memphis, Tennessee. It’s all fucked up down there. So are the people. DJ Pinky has no love for you hoes. Lil Tino is the nigga behind the ski mask.

Funkytown uses a handful of funky African drums and beats over crunchy vocals. Those African drums are filled with loudness. This is a junt as they say in Memphis.

Funky Shit deals with the shit that makes niggas minds click gets them upset. The song uses a mildly warm bassline that roars throughout the track. Funk meets rap on Funky Shit. One of the best songs off Lil Tino's iconic tape. DJ Pinky’s bass is off the charts!

DJ Pinky ‎– Deadly Friendz album review

DJ Pinky ‎– Deadly Friendz has the most ethereal distorted beats for a 1998 album. Deadly Friendz is a DJ Fela masterpiece. The whole album goes fucking hard! 100% percent original underground Memphis shit. DJ Pinky produced all the tracks on Deadly Friendz himself. He puts in his own eerie dark twist in his production style. Each junt is tight and worth listening to. Highlights on the album include Head Hunters, Holy Ground, Lov & Happiness, Never Change, Deadly Affair, and Super Flying.

DJ Pinky put his dark Memphis rap twist and production style on Lov & Happiness with those super heavy synths. DJ Pinky never fails to disappoint his audience.  Lov & Happiness is a dark Memphis rap cover of Al Green - Love and Happiness. Lov & Happiness sampled Al Green - Love and Happiness.

Love is a drug which will make you think, “Family & friends. Who can I trust?”. Sometime you have to prioritize love and happiness in your live. Love and happiness do not always mix well with each other even though some people will want you to believe love and happiness fit perfectly well with each other. That is not always the case or situation.

The song Head Hunters has that dark Memphis sound due to the ethereal beats, distortion, and lo-fi sounds. The song goes fucking hard! Head Hunters about a lady who is this head hunting bitch who will rob you for your dick. DJ Pinky raps about being a head hunter (killer) who murders random people throughout the song.

DJ Pinky wakes up in the morning searching for the thrill to kill and murder any person. He is walking through his neighborhood with a nice little switchblade. He is fucked in the head. The reason he is walking through his neighborhood with a nice little switchblade is because he is out looking for some niggas to kill and murder. Now he is still on the run.

DJ Pinky gets into the subject about this head hunting bitch. Don’t make a move as she will rob you for your dick. This head hunting bitch is in disguise wearing weave, a tight mini-skirt, and has long pretty nails. Another noticeable feature of her is large size breasts. So stay low and undercover.

Funkytown Part 2 uses a handful of funky African drums, super heavy synths, and beats over crunchy vocals. Those African drums are filled with loudness. This is a junt as they say in Memphis.

Holy Ground is an underground Memphis rap just that is not as well known by Memphis rap fans. This song has that dark eerie production similar to production from DJ Fela. One can easily assume DJ Pinky was influenced by DJ Fela’s production style when he recorded and composed this song.

Lil Ramsey – Goin' Undercover album review

Lil Ramsey – Goin' Undercover has the most ethereal distorted beats for a 1994 album. The whole album goes fucking hard and is a masterpiece! The album has the eerie action packed gangsta rap track Kickin In Doors and the insane brooding trap track Loosin My Mind. Ramsey's young but distinct style makes this album worth listening to. This is some perfect classic underground Memphis rap. Goin' Undercover is a great album if you're into Lil Corb, Tommy Wright III, MC Mack, Three 6 Mafia, Princess Loko, Lady J, or anything Memphis.

Tommy Wright III produced the entire album himself without any help from other local Memphis in-house producers. Goin' Undercover was basically a showcase for Lil Ramsey which is what this entire album served as. The main featured artist is Tommy Wright III who at that time was part of the Magnolia Crime Click and the legendary rap group Ten Wanted Men. Lil Ramsey was best known for his collaborations with Tommy Wright III as a member of the legendary rap group Ten Wanted Men during this time.

Lil Ramsey – Goin' Undercover was later rereleased several times officially and unofficially. This album has been bootlegged several times. The white label version of this cassette is the original version which was released on cassette only in 1994 by Street Smart Records. The white label version has different hooks and verses than any of those represses and bootlegs. The 1994 version much better than the redux.

There was no CD version of this album issued or pressed until sometime during the 2000s. The CD version was issued and released by Street Smart Records sometime during the mid-2000s.

There is a blue label version of this cassette. The blue label version has the original mix down of Kill at Will with Tommy Wright III. Kill at Will has a completely different beat from the version on the white label version. One version was released for the streets and the other version was released for commercial use.

Kickin In Doors is an eerie action packed, suspense filled gangsta rap track with Lil Ramsey and Tommy Wright III rapping about committing robberies and doing home invasions. They show no remorse, sorrow, or mercy when killing people.

Tommy Wright III got the gat. Lil Ramsey is going to load that hoe (gat) up with bullets. As they break through the occupied dwelling, both of them say, “Get ´em up! Break yourself! Stick ´em up. We’re making stains. A nigga in that markin suit don’t hesitate to shoot that thang.” This is evidenced during Verse 1 at the very beginning of this song.

[Verse 1: Lil Ramsey & Tommy Wright III]
Get ´em up
Break yourself
Stick ´em up we’re making stains
A nigga in that markin suit don’t hesitate to shoot that thang

Drug deals are being kidnapped and hit for their stash spot leaving them assed out. That is what the lyrics “For kidnapping all your dope boys hit your stash spot/Leaving you bitches assed out” are referring to.

Both of them are making stains on that other level. A hoe better not move. Turn around, bitch. Don’t break your cap because Lil Ramsey and Tommy Wright III will peel your cap and commence to killing. So don’t even think about running for that sawed-off shotgun. Don’t think you’re hard and can’t be hurt because Lil Ramsey and Tommy Wright III roll with a ruthless click that specializes in dusting and dumping tricks (bitches) called Ten Wanted Men. He is motivated by pimping and prostitution. Hella fire from making stains from leaving bodies swelled with heads off.

Both of them show no remorse, sorrow, or mercy when killing people. This is evident in lyrics such as these: “Dumping hoes/Leaving bodies swelled with they head off/The victim of a killer/Left ´em stankin when we dropped ´em off” and “Young buck nigga assed out/So I’m going to rob/Better not catch you slippin’ or trying to splurge when I’m on my job”

Tommy Wright is a nigga from 4 Corners that ain’t got shit, ain’t never gone be shit, and never gone have shit. What does he do? He puts in work until the day he dies. He can’t get a job. Nobody move and nobody gets hurt. Always lookin for some trouble. That’s how shit jumps off whenever Lil Ramsey is strapped with Tommy. Now Tommy can’t depend on luck every time he shoots dice while gambling. That is just wishful thinking.

Drop it off and break yourself. Running ain’t gonna save your life.

Loosin My Mind is an insane brooding trap track where Lil Ramsey falls into a mind state of insanity and looses all control as he is a lunatic killer. He plays the role of a lunatic killer throughout the song. The song divulges into the mindset of a lunatic killer.

Lil Ramsey is the lunatic the killer who is dumping bodies and making hella blood stains. Ramsey is alll about his pimping. Whipping those bitches. Slugs from the 30-30 leave bitches bodies numb. Niggas talking shit like they wanna come and get some. Ramsey ain’t got no love for them shaky bitches that test his pimping skills. He executes people for a living. The lunatic killer is a night walking psychopathic mad man. That is what “The lunatic psychopathic night walking mad man” refers to. The villain from Magnolia is just too thick.

Problems on his mind distract him as he is sitting in a deep sweat. He is lost in reality. He is trying to get a grip on reality. Ramsey is mentally insane. Having visions of a bloody bitch. Lyrics to Verse 2 explain the problems on his mind which distract as he is sitting in a deep sweat lost in reality. This is where shit starts getting realistic.

Problems on my mind that distract me
I’m sitting in a deep sweat
Thinking and I’m lost in reality
Trying to get a grip or still I’m changing with a quick click
Mentally insane having visions of a bloody bitch
Down with Magnolia trick
A nigga is staying true and hard

I still remember time blacking out waking up in blood
Having nightmares chilling with the devil smoking bud
This shit is getting realistic
I can’t take it thinking I’m losing my mind
These dreams never change
It’s the same one every time
I’m afraid to go to sleep
I keep on seeing the demon bloody eyes
Watching over a player hoping I slip and I don’t stay alive
See that’s the shit that troubles me
Keeps a nigga on the edge
Wanna fear the clip
Cock the glock and put it to my head
But still I hold it back and turn the suicide into a creep
See that’s the type of problem on mind that distract me

Ramsey still remembers time blacking out and waking up in blood. Having nightmares chilling with the devil smoking bud. This shit is getting realistic. He can’t take it anymore. He thinks he is losing is mind. These dreams of his never change. It’s the same one every time. Lil Ramsey is too afraid to go to sleep. He keeps on seeing the demon watching over a player hoping he slip and doesn’t stay alive. See that’s the shit that troubles him. Keeps a nigga on the edge. Suicide is the type of problem on mind that distracts him.

Hoes Like Sucking Dick is one of the catchy yet explicit and provocative songs by Lil Ramsey. The song is most memorable for the DJ Paul vocal samples. This explains his role in the prostitution game as he does pimping. Ya cum suckin' dirty hoes that train like you're hard 'n shit. You play them big roles, andn all the time you like suckin' dick. Yeah, this is Lil Ramsey comin' straight from that Magnolia Crime Click; down with the Triple Six Mafia, BITCH!

These fuckin' hoes been a factor. We all know that. Because Lil Ramsey got the chewin' that gives out breath to his fellow foes. Lil Ramsey is straight from Magnolia, mane. But "Freak" is his middle name. He finds himself a dirty bitch and teach her this pimping game shit.

All the freaks of the world who play the game like they are stuck up. Leave a bitch in a ditch with a mouth full of sticky shit. The pimps and the macks, mane. The playas who serve crack and hoes with big butts who love to taste nuts. His mind is hesitated and his dick is elevated.

Verse 2 indicates Lil Ramsey and Three 6 Mafia had a relationship at one point. Just read the lyrics.

[Verse 2: Lil Ramsey]
To the dirty hoes all around
Triple Six is about to clown
We knew in advance
We comin' hard with this ruthless clan[?]
All you traitors 'n bitches
That slowin' niggas wit riches, mayne
I gotta get payed
I gotta mess with the 12 gauge
I was born in Magnolia, comin' deep out the fuckin' South
If I didn't get no cheese, I'm stickin' my dick in a hoes mouth
These dirty hoes love dis shit, Project Pimp I will always be
Comin' Straight Outta Memphis, but it's located in Tennessee
Comin' hard from the dark side, leavin' bitches for dead
So find a hoe in an alley, with "666" on her fuckin' head
Everything slays straight, and quite a step in our fuckin' click
And if we ever get jumbled, we got the 9's and the pistol grips
I never had second thoughts, remorse, I know none
We shoot up yo fuckin' family, and label it "Job done!"
All the pimps of the world, fuck them bitches who talkin' shit
Been a long time fact, that all hoes like suckin' dick

N-9 - Nowhere To Run (N-9 - BUY THE TAPE BITCH) album review

N-9 - Nowhere To Run (N-9 - BUY THE TAPE BITCH) is lo-fo production mixed with dark eerie rap and catchy beats which fans of Memphis rap crave and yearn for. Which was typical for the time this album was released. There were many lo-fi production Memphis rap albums released in 1994 and N-9 - Nowhere To Run (N-9 - BUY THE TAPE BITCH) was one of those albums. This album was produced by Archie Baldhead, Sunny Mack, and the legendary DJ Paul.

Nowhere To Run is a dark eerie death rap track with yet lo-fi production with dark eerie thin synth layered underneath heavy beats behind the jacked Phantasm theme. This dark eerie rap track is similar to Lil Corb, MC Mack, DJ Sound, Bone Thugs N Harmony, and Lil Tino.

You a Hoe is goofy rap track ridden with goofy lo-fi keyboards but has enough catchy flows to carry the song along. However the production sucks and is too lo-fi. You a Hoe is the wackest on the album.

The real name of Ready To Die is actually Rest In Pain contrary to what many Memphis rap fans would have you believe. Samples used in this song were Funkadelic - I'll Stay and Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die. The sample of Funkadelic - I'll Stay is chopped up with Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die.
