Zapp - Back By Popular Demand album review

Following the tragic deaths of Zapp band members Roger Troutman and Larry Troutman in 1999 as a result of a murder-suicide, the band took a break to recover emotionally. A few years later in 2003, Zapp resurfaced after the establishment of its own independent label Zapp Town Records which the Troutman family continues operate out of Hamilton, Ohio. Zapp released Back By Popular Demand in 2003. Zapp decided that Back By Popular Demand would be the last Zapp album that the band would release because without Roger’s presence the band’s charisma and atmosphere isn’t the same. Zapp without Roger is unthinkable. Since then, Zapp has returned to performing live concerts and touring across the US as band. Zapp now performs only in live concerts.

Back By Popular Demand is all original material and not a bunch of remakes of classic Zapp hits. This makes the Zapp band and Troutman family works more commendable. There are no outtakes or remixes of earlier works to be found on this record here. You will find the traditional Zapp sound on this album. Zapp’s Back By Popular Demand delivers a breath of freshness with the traditional Zapp sound. Oh, here it is, big baby! Zapp VI: Back by Popular Demand. That's for sure, that's for sure.

The song You've Got Mail is about a man who’s trying to get in contact with this girl he loves through email and their chatroom.

He checks his email everyday in hopes that she has something to say. He always has this secret dream
that she is his computer screen. The chatroom was their place to be but there they had no privacy. His computer notified him by sending him a notification saying he received an email. His computer notified him that he got an email. “You've got mail from that girl.”

He clicked onto his favorite screen to see if they could have a thing. If she would use technology, she would be in love with him. The chatroom was their place to be but right then and there they had no privacy.

Now you know He is sitting here waiting on her call. He went to their chatroom but she was not there. He wonders if she is going to log in to their chatroom to have a conversation with him because he wants to be with her on his computer screen. He wonders, “Are you gonna log on, baby? Are you gonna talk to me? I wanna be with you, baby. On my computer screen.”

You've Got Mail is an updated version of Computer Love from The New Zapp IV U. The song You've Got Mail was truly ahead of its time and was relevant at the right time. And still is to an extent. It’s internet based love on You’ve Got Mail. Electronic music meets pop, R&B, and soul music on the You've Got Mail song. You've Got Mail is Computer Love revisited.

You've Got Mail showcases the Zapp band performing in their prime. Talk box vocals match up with both lead vocals and background vocals despite talk box vocals taking lead charge as being a main presence for the vocal portion. The percussion matches up perfectly with slow tempo of the song being that the tempo is not too fast as You've Got Mail proves to be a love song performed in a slow soothing melody.

Talk box vocals match up with both lead vocals and background vocals. The percussion blends in perfectly splendid with the moog synthesizers along with acoustic guitars. The upbeat tempo is perfect for this song. Parts of the song feel slow however. Zapp is known for being fast and slow at the same time in their songs.

Now the pre-chorus is what makes this song memorable, relevant, and hilarious.

[Pre-Chorus]
The chatroom was our place to be
But there we had no privacy
As I was just about to leave
My computer said to me

The song uses a chorus that is catchy. These are the catchy lyrics that the chorus sings.

[Chorus]
You've got mail from that girl (you've got mail)
You've got mail from that girl (you've got mail)
You've got mail from that girl (I got my email, baby)
You've got mail from that girl

A man has a conversation with his friend about him trying to contact this girl. However he is only to contact her through email. Their conversation can be heard at the beginning.

[Intro]
– Hey man, did you finally catch up with her?
– Hey man. No, I didn't catch up with her, but it's the thing where like, I'm checking the email every day. Trying to see what's going on. I cannot catch it, man
– Email?
– Yeah, you know what I'm sayin'?
– But did you get the number, man?
– Man, all I got is her email
– All I got is her email.

[Intro]
– Hey man, did you catch up with...
Did you finally catch up with her?
– Hey man. No, I didn't catch up with her, but it's the thing where like, I'm checking the email every day; trying to see what's going on. I cannot catch it, man

– Yeah, you know what I'm sayin'?
– But did you get the number, man?

(Sho-do-do...)
Ooh... (sho-do-do...)

[Verse 2]

To see if we could have a thing, girl

Are you gonna talk to me?
I wanna be with you, baby
On my computer screen, yeah
[Pre-Chorus]
The chatroom was our place to be
But there we had no privacy (no privacy)

You've got mail from that girl (you've got mail...)
You've got mail from that girl (yeah...)
You've got mail from that girl
(You've got mail from that girl, oh yeah...)

Say You Will, Say You Won’t is a love song about woman who plays with a man’s emotions by turning tables on him. Say You Will, Say You Won’t uses an Caribbean dancehall style guitar which follows an upbeat rhythm.

The man will do what it takes to keep the woman satisfied and happy. He will do whatever it take to satisfy her and their love so that way she will stay around. First she said that they were cool and she was satisfied. And then she put the drama on and started doing things. That made him start to wonder why. This is explained in the pre-chorus and Verse 1.

[Verse 1]
Sugar, won't you tell me
What it takes to keep you happy
Oh baby, I need to know now
What I got to do, to make you stay around

[Pre-Chorus]
First you said that we were cool (we were cool)
And you were satisfied (and that you were satisfied)
And then you put the drama on, started doing things (things)
That made me start to wonder why
(That made me start to wonder why)

She's Bout To Roll is another Zapp dance song. She's Bout To Roll is Get Up Off The Wall, The Way You Walk And Move, I Can Make You Dance, You've Got Mail, and Dance Floor revisited in a nut shell. Think of all these tracks rolled into one and you have the resulting song called She's Bout To Roll by Zapp. All dancers will automatically fall in love with She's Bout To Roll as well.

Talk box vocals match up with both lead vocals and background vocals despite talk box vocals taking lead charge as being a main presence for the vocal portion. The upbeat tempo is perfect for this song. The percussion blends in perfectly splendid with the moog synthesizers along with acoustic guitars. Big Robb is the man who raps here.

Now since this is a Zapp song, catchy lyrics are used in the chorus.

[Pre-Chorus]
She asked me if I had someplace for us to go (place to go)
So we could be alone, and take things nice and slow (nice and slow)
We finished up our drinks and headed towards the door (towards the door)
I let the fellas know that she's about to roll, ah yeah

[Chorus]
She's 'bout to roll (she's about to roll)
With me tonight (with me tonight)
She's 'bout to roll (she's about to roll)
And we gon' do it right (we gon' do it right)
She's 'bout to roll (she's about to roll)
With me tonight (with me tonight)
She's 'bout to roll and I'm gon' make it alright

Damien "D" Phoenix tells this lady, “Hey lady, how you doin'? Looking fine in them jeans.”  Talk to me for a minute. Ain't no need to be mean. Plus what I'm about to say will probably brighten your night. Been peepin' out your favorite tongue ring, that's right. Lookin' like a supermodel, Halle Berry type status. Tattooed with heels, baby girl, it's real. You and your girls came out for an all-girl party. But you're leavin' with me and you won't be sorry.”

Damien "D" Phoenix sees this lady near the dance floor. Lookin' like a Halle Berry type status supermodel all Tattooed with heels. Standing at a height of 5' 4'' with her hair cut low. Momma's looking beautiful from head to toe. So I walked over to her, introduces himself to her, and starts a conversation with her. He clearly hits on her. Damien "D" Phoenix plans to brighten her night by having her leave the club with him.

Get Up Off The Wall is very reminiscent of I Can Make You Dance from Zapp III. This upbeat song is a perfect song to dance to and boogie. All dancers will automatically fall in love with Get Up Off The Wall. It’s one of those old school skating rink 80s dance type song. Get Up Off The Wall is I Can Make You Dance and Dance Floor revisited.

The upbeat tempo is perfect for this song. The percussion and beats blends in perfectly splendid with the moog synthesizers. Talk box blends in well with the moog synthesizers and lead vocals as well as the background vocals. Talk box vocals match up with both lead vocals and background vocals despite talk box vocals taking lead charge as being a main presence for the vocal portion. Soulful singing in the background is accompanied by an angelic harmonious chorus.

I just can't wait because the party's about to start. Zapp is about to blow the spot. We're gonna start the party on the dance floor where those busters and those haters ain't about to ride no more. If you wanna rise up, and bounce, and roll. Then listen to these things and they will let you know.

Get up off the wall. Why don't you get up off the wall? Get up off the wall and let Zapp show you how to ball. Throw them bows in your spot and watch 'em drop it like it's hot. Get up off the wall and watch 'em drop it like it's hot. Get up off the wall. From Zapp Town to yo town.

If you ask me where the party's at, I’ll definitely know and tell you the location. Throw your hands up in the air because it's on the dance floor. If you get up off the wall and keep it real just one more time, then them girls will do them thangs that really will blow your mind.

While we're on the dance floor, it feels like ecstasy. But the way we're gonna do it, ain't no other way to be. We're gonna make you dance. We gon' jump up in the air and keep on dancin' with them pros.

Hey yo, man. Why is you trippin' with these honeys dippin’?You bring me out late night, left your girl, you creepin'? I thought you was deepin' with this dance floor thang. Now you wanna talk about that ol' girl knowing she can't hang. Let's step to the dance floor. We can have 'em all.

The Way You Walk And Move is smooth slow Zapp melody. The beats match up with the slow tempo. Soulful singing in the background is accompanied by an angelic harmonious chorus. Big Robb is the man who raps here. He does a fine job. Vocalist Nicole Cottom gives The Way You Walk And Move a breath of fresh sounds with her singing and vocals.

She knew Damien "D" Phoenix was a player by the way that he moves. She said he walks like Denzel from Mo' Better Blues. He was wearing a White Kangol tailored with a 2-piece suit. She was steady blowin' kisses at Damien. Telling him that he is cute. He was feelin' her too. Baby girl had style. Then he gave her a smile. At this point he was driving her wild. It was physical attraction as they were caught up in reaction. This is now one on one guaranteed satisfaction for both of them.

[Rap]
She knew I was a player by the way that I move
Said I walk like Denzel from Mo' Better Blues
White Kangol tailored with a 2-piece suit
Steady blowin' kisses at me, tellin' me that I'm cute
I was feelin' her too, baby girl had style
Then I gave her a smile, I was drivin' her wild
It was physical attraction, caught up in reaction
Me and you, one on one, guaranteed satisfaction

Zapp Is Back marked the return and comeback of Zapp for the years 2002 and 2003. The upbeat tempo is perfect for this song. The percussion and beats blends in perfectly with the moog synthesizers. Talk box blends in well with the moog synthesizers and lead vocals as well as the background vocals.

Zapp is back and they’re in demand. Zapp is back and they’re gonna make you dance. Their game is hot and and they’re blowin' up the spot. Zapp is back. The Zapp band is back and they are not playing.

The members of Zapp tell us the freaky, deaky, zeeky, about their late night fantasies on the song Late Night Fantasy.

Terry woke up out of his sleep today. He could not feel no pain. His mind was on this certain game. You know, that certain game where you and I would play and where you would do them freaky things that keep me loving you. And then we would get off the chain and never be the same. Terry took you to his room, and then both of you did things naturally. We laughed, talked, kissed, and hugged. It felt like ecstasy. He looked across the room at you and it occurred to him that you're the biggest part of his late night fantasy.

Terry is gonna tell you about the freaky things in him that are a part of his late night fantasy.  The freaky things in him are his late night fantasy. The members of Zapp are gonna tell you about the freaky things in them that are a part of their late night fantasy.

We bounced up out your spot tonight and headed for his place. And he just had to get with you. It showed up on his face. The way we're gonna do this thing is just like in his dreams. Terry needs to let you know about his late night fantasy, baby. We did things naturally. We laughed, we talked, we kissed and hugged. It felt like ecstasy.

Zapp Town Records is on a late night creep. They are deep with the talk box, bass, and bottoms. No Doz. Just straight flows and heads bobbin'. She's droppin' 'cause this vibe's poppin’. She's escaping satin sheets and running like a track meet. Trying to hook up with a late night fantasy.

This Is Our Song For You is a dedication song to the late great deceased Zapp band member Roger Troutman. The band promised to keep the tradition and legacy of their brother Roger. All Zapp band members perform together on This Is Our Song For You. All Zapp members truly shine here on this composition piece at the end. This piece of work is simply Zapp’s most splendid dedication song! This Is Our Song For You showcases the Zapp band performing in their prime.

His attitude brought much love to him (Your tender touch) Of course Roger had a tender touch which made us love him so much. His love just keeps on shining through and his love will go on endlessly.

His music has the sound that makes it stay around. Roger is and was part of everything Zapp does. Roger taught us how to make life grow. We remember the good things about Roger.

Lyrics to this song clearly exemplify how much the members of Zapp miss Roger.

[Verse 1]
I've been thinkin' 'bout you everyday
I'm just tryin' to find the words to say (words to say)
I can't forget what you've meant to me
Your love will go on endlessly

[Pre-Chorus 1]
(Your attitude) your attitude
(Brought much love to you) brought much love to you
(Your tender touch) you've got a tender touch
(Made us love you much) made us love you much
(Your music has the sound) it has the sound
(That makes it stay around) and it's still around, still around
(So what we're gonna do, is dedicate this song to you)

[Verse 2]
Every time I hear your favorite song
It makes me think about you all day long
And when I think about those beautiful years
There's no way for me to hold back the tears

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Your attitude (attitude), brought much love to you (oh yeah)
Your tender touch (tender touch) made us love you much
(Your music has) your music has the sound
(That sound) that makes it stay around (around)
So what we're gonna do, is dedicate this song to you

[Bridge]
You taught me everything I know (everything I know)
And you taught us how to make life grow (make life grow)
We remember the good things about you
Always loving you, we never will forget you
The least that we can do, is sing this song to you

I Wanna Love You is a collage of electronic and soul music soothing for the human soul. I Wanna Love You is a beautiful Zapp love song. The song I Wanna Love You is also perfect for a romantic marriage getaway.
