Andrew Jackson Intermediate School was an intermediate school located on the east side of Detroit, Michigan which operated from 1928 to 2007. Nearly all Detroit citizen know about this school, but its history is slowly being forgotten.
Andrew Jackson Intermediate School was designed by B.C. Wetzel & Co. and was built in 1928. Detroit Urbex highlights this school as “one of Detroit's more unique schools in terms of design”. The layout is fairly typical of school buildings designed in the 1920s. The school held up a capacity of 2,200 students.
Throughout its history, Andrew Jackson Intermediate School operated as an intermediate school and a middle school for Detroit Public School. Overall the school was closed in 2007 due to low enrollment and low test scores. Today the school now sits abandoned.

DeleteI remember Mr. Monroe, the principal, Mr. Semeral, one of the counselors, Mrs. Hadley, the music teacher, Mrs. West, a homeroom teacher, Mr. Van Orden band teacher, Ms. Phillips 9th grade home room teacher. It was a great school to attend. Mrs. Hadley, the music teacher taught us all the songs to “South Pacific” in glee club. I attended Jackson from 7th to the 9th grade. I graduated in 1962 from Jackson and off to high school.
Deletei went to Jackson from 1948 to 1951 and Mack Monroe was principal then also. I was in the band under Duane Van Orden, too. My homeroom teacher was Jane (Cooper) Summers who taught Social Studies in Room 223.
ReplyDeleteI attended and graduated from Jackson Jr. High in 62. Mr. Monroe was the principal and I believe Mr. Simerall was a counselor. My homeroom teacher was Ms. Phillips, Rm 213. Ms. Hadley was the music teacher. I loved going to the school.
ReplyDeleteI attend Jackson in 1982-1984 where I met my 1st girlfriend name Tawanna. She lives on Cope St. I would like to say hello if I can locate her.
ReplyDeleteI attended Jackson Intermediate from 1945 to 1947. The school was huge and remember our PE included learning how to swim. Attended Hosmer Elementary School then moved to Jackson.
ReplyDeleteCould this school have originally been called Jackson Grammar School? Reason I ask is that I just found my father in laws grammar school pin from 1936 that reads Jackson Grammar School. He did attend public school on the east side. thanks

I went to Jackson from 1960-1963 also all my siblings from Alexander Hamilton grade school. We lived in the Parkside projects and had to walk to school.I was a swimming guard there. My swimming teacher was Mr. West. Mrs Tenny was over the school staff. My home room teacher was Mrs Ford. I took metal, general and wood shop there. Was one of the best schools for it,s time. We used to hang out at the store across the street on wavney . After leaving I went on to Cass Tech.
ReplyDeleteYes, those were the days. I also attended, from 1962-65; then also went on to Cass Tech. The teachers did a good job, considering the 1,500 students.
