Mixerr Album Reviews #1,854

Simken Heights - Ashtray Junkees is a long forgotten classic Lansing rap album filled with horrorcore and acid rap that meets the sounds of blues music. The album has that early 90s sound you would expect to hear from a rap album that was released in 1991. Of course their album has some wicked shit!

If you are a fan of Esham, Natas, Mastamind, Mars, Twisted Insane, Twiztid, or any horrorcore rap artist, then you enjoy Simken Heights. You can't really go wrong with Simken Heights as they are true horrorcore heroes of acid rap!

The A Side is the Loonie Side and the B Side is the Zombie Side.

Learning To Fly has a unique sound where blues music meets acid rap with a touch of that wicked horrorcore sound. The song uses heavy bass. The strings selection is composed of upright bass, acoustic guitar, and an electric guitar. Learning To Fly has a mellow mid tempo vibe. The electric guitar used gives Learning To Fly that sad downtempo blues sound.

Simken Heights first made their way through the Midwest in 1991 with one of their most well-known songs Blast Blast. Simken Heights began building a loyal fanbase immediately with this song. The song later appeared on their second album from 1992 called Smoke Box.

Ignite It has that eerie sound similar to that crunk Memphis rap. Simken Heights shows a nihilistic look on life on this song.

Simken Heights first made their way through the Midwest in 1991 with one of second most well-known songs Smoke Box (Smokebox). Simken Heights began building a loyal fanbase immediately with this song. The song appeared on their debut album from 1991 called Ashtray Junkees.

Overall Smoke Box is a great song to burn a blunt and get high to. Despite its calming title, the song has an upbeat sound and uses an upbeat tempo. Its uptempo sound is what stands out. The sound quality is not perfect and is very low budget. Vocals play more on the right speaker than on a balanced stereo setting. This song will bring back memories.

I rate this album 4/5****!
