This purple building was located on the corner of Fleming Road and Pasadena Avenue. Many Flintstoners remember the location of 1602 West Pasadena Avenue of being home to several businesses. These businesses included a tire shop, a grocery store, a record store, auto mechanic station, 810 Motors, Days Hair Care, Picture Studio, Paradise Liquor, and a restaurant called Big Al’s. It was also home to a soul food restaurant, burger joint, clothing store, a gas station, candy store, A&D Recording, and a corner store too. Pasadena Avenue was a booming strip back in the day.
Sherman Hensley and George Jefferson owned this building. Behind this purple building was a drug store called Franklin’s Min A Mart which was located on 3417 Fleming Road. James B. Now the purple building on 1602 Pasadena Avenue was once home to Soul Beat Records from 1978 to 1982. People got their concert tickets at Soul Beat Records. This was before Nick’s Records, Music Planet, and Electric Crown Records. Now Soul Beat Records had the best black music had to offer whether it be jazz, soul, blues, R&B, funk, or dance. It was a popular record store back in the day.
This purple building was also home to a restaurant called BIG AL'S FISH & RIB CRIB. Big Al’s was owned and operated by Alec Demps Sr for 5 years from 1998 to 2003. His restaurant was famous in Flint on a huge scale. Flint Journal often covered this restaurant in their newspaper.
Apparently this building was also an auto shop called Switchbox. Switchbox served as an auto mechanic station and tire shop.
