Schulmeier Cemetery is one of the hundreds of cemeteries located in San Antonio and Bexar County. Not too much history can be found or discovered about this cemetery. This cemetery is located on the Northeast side of San Antonio, Texas. This news article will explain the history behind Schulmeier Cemetery.
Leopold Schulmeier plotted this cemetery in 1886 off what is modern day road Wetmore. This cemetery was a family cemetery which belonged to the Schulmeier family. Bettie F. Schulmeier was the first person to be buried in this cemetery. She died in 1889. Family members of the Schaefer family and Steubing family have been buried here as well.
The most recent burial for this cemetery was the burial of Max Carl Schulmeier who died on the date of 11/6/1967. The cemetery fell into disuse by 1970. There were no known modifications or destruction done to Schulmeier Cemetery after 1970. The land for Schulmeier Cemetery was transferred over to Bexar County shortly after Max Carl Schulmeier passed away.
FindAGrave reported the cemetery of having their gate locked in 2006. So Schulmeier Cemetery was inaccessible by 2006 and was very overgrown. Many historians, surveyors, and volunteers were unable to gain access. (Ref: https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/6807/schulmeier-cemetery#view-photo=4280181)
A comment from one of the users on foursquare.com dating back to July 2012 reports “People are just dying to get in here.” There have been attempts set by a small handful to access this cemetery. However the cemetery is inaccessible due to overgrowth of natural vegetation. (Ref: https://foursquare.com/v/schulmeier-cemetery/4f0d35c6e4b0b3060641cf2e)
US DOT has listed Schulmeier Cemetery as Potentially NRHP-Eligible Cemetery in a historic cultural resources survey composed in July 2016.
