The 2008 album Rukus - Can’t Forget features an eclectic mix of funk, soul, and classic hip hop with the gritty edge that only a Texas artist could provide. This is an album with a purpose.

Everyday is and has proven to be one of the most inspiring songs written for women in the 00s decade. The song charted at #50 in HipHopCritics Top 100 Songs of 2008. Everyday showed off his skills as this is some overall strong work of his.

Can't Forget is one of his many inspirational songs to date. In his own words, the concept at the heart of Can't Forget is "that you can't forget your purpose, where you want to go, and most importantly where you came from." This is a song with a purpose.

I'm The Best is one of those braggadocious tracks on the album. He lets everyone know how and why he is the best. Rukus comes with that 210 flow.

Rise Up is an educational rap track where Rukus takes us through the pages of history to show us we can't get any where if we don't know where we come from. You know the old saying from Irish statesman Edmund Burke, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” And the other saying from British statesman Winston Churchill, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Lessons from the past may not always ward off doom, but they can provide insights into the present and even the future. The triumphant sounds from real hip hop are present on this track.

Rukus - Homegrown is a fresh Afrocentric hip hop album with a blend of world music. The album is totally different from any typical Southern rap album as hip hop/rap meets world music on this album. Rukus uses a smooth flow and witty lyrics with his raps. The lyrics to his songs grab you by the ears and infiltrate your emotions like Tank due to his tasteful and meaningful lyrics. This MC reps Nigeria and the San Antonio to the fullest. You will not want to miss out on listening to this incredible lyricist.


I Pimp is a toast to all pimps out there. I Pimp is one of those braggadocious tracks on the album similar to his song I'm The Best from his 2008 album Can’t Forget. He lets everyone know how and why he is the best.

Rukus proposes a toast to the pimps out there. Nobody is better than Rukus. Yea he said it! He’s half gorilla pimp. So he walks four-legged. He is ready to blow like the weed in your hand. Don’t jump into the cypher when he is beating you. He doesn’t need a label. Rukus rocks the world as if he had the globe in a cradle.

He comes with that 210 flow. His 210 has got you messed up lying in the dirt. Rims got you choked up. It ain’t about the flashy materialistic things.


Rukus pays homage, tribute, and respect to the Motherland of Africa on the song African Queen (Remix). He reps the green and white (Nigeria) throughout the song. African Queen (Remix) mirrors life realistically in many countries located on the continent of Africa. Rukus also pays homage, tribute, and respect to his country of Nigeria.

Known as the king of the remix, Rukus always adds that extra special element to tracks. The song has a vibe of high energy and happiness. The hit single “African Queen (Remix)” received airplay in the US, UK, Nigeria, and Ghana. His touching rap remix to TuFace's "African Queen" garnered attention from the United Nations. The song was chosen as part of a compilation album with proceeds to aid in the fight against poverty.

He smiles when touches the land of Nigeria and the continent of Africa. Rukus is in love with the African culture despite the crime, poverty, and corruption.


The song Ride With Me is a mid tempo paced Afrocentric rap song with a small touch of acoustics. The song has a vibe of high energy and happiness. Yet oddly enough there is a lack of instrumentalness and reverb. The song Ride With Me has a tempo of 100 BPM and is played in the G Major key (9B Camelot).

The release of Mentalinstrum - After Hours is one of the lesser known garage house singles/EP from NYC that definitely flew under the radar. Now what stands out about this slightly unique garage house EP is that this garage house EP is romance based which is there are so many romantic themes based on love with songs such as Leave Me, Ah! I'm Coming, Love Changes, and Dance With Me.

Ah! I'm Coming an intoxicating garage house romance song with such repetitive vocals which get annoying after a while. Nothing special here. Only fans of garage house will enjoy and understand the song.

Dance With Me uses a mixture of Salsa dance mixed with that NYC styled garage house sound and plenty of bass many fans of electronic music enjoy. The song serves as an example of some of the great stuff produced by Smack Productions.

Leave Me uses a bunch of warped pads, chords, and angelic synths. This song uses more dance oriented synths and dance beats instead of solely relying on electronic music. You will love those slamming sounds!

Love Changes is aromatics garage house masterpiece produced by Eddie Perez himself. Eddie Perez is the master of garage house. Mentalinstrum/Smack Productions had their signature sound back in the 90s. It is rare for producers to have their "own" signature sound these days as music these days sound the same. Love Changes will make you love house music and especially garage house. The beats are absolutely sick!

Deus-Ex-Machina - Threat Of Aggression is a highlight of some of the best old school techno from 1992. The single had techno stompers such as Threat Of Aggression and Rage. This is pure rave techno here. The single charted all the way to #1 on Chicago Techno Charts and #5 in Miami, which had a much smaller techno scene, back in 1992. As expected this single was popular in the underground techno scene during that time. Deus-Ex-Machina was a side project affiliated with the synth-pop/new wave band London Exchange. Sadly their side project never took off and their single went unnoticed by the masses which is a shame because their single charted in the single digits underground.


Threat Of Aggression was a techno stomper from back in the day many techno fans and electronic fans remember. Threat Of Aggression charted all the way to #1 on Chicago Techno Charts and #5 in Miami, which had a much smaller techno scene, back in 1992. Many techno fans remember the vocal samples that were used in this song. This song was popular in the underground techno scene. Vocal samples in this stomper were used from 1951 film The Day the Earth Stood Still which is where those vocals come from.

Rage a great old school techno tune which is electronic pads, electronic synths, and chords. John Phipps kills it with those chords. Rage uses a tempo of 129 BPM in similar fashion and format to Threat Of Aggression (Sonic Rave Mix) and Threat Of Aggression (Klaatu Klub Mix). Although there are not as many of those vocal stabs as was the case with Threat Of Aggression. Nevertheless Rage is just as good of an old school techno tune as Threat Of Aggression is.

Hustletron ‎– Other Sounds, Other Worlds EP is another one of the lesser know New Breed releases that is considerably obscure and difficult to find. The obscurity and rarity of this New Breed vinyl EP is what makes the EP so interesting and appealing. Of course the Hustletron ‎– Other Sounds, Other Worlds EP is just as obscure and rare as the Lunar Deep ‎– Games single is. This Hustletron release has some dope breakbeats over jazzy hip hop and electronic sounds. He also added in some elements of trip hop and funk to the mix. He also incorporated the sounds of soul music in this EP of his which is quite unusual.

Hustletron ‎– Other Sounds, Other Worlds EP was released as a vinyl single sometime in/around 1998. Now Hustletron ‎– Other Sounds, Other Worlds EP was released on vinyl only. There was no CD pressing for this release.

The single Various ‎– Mad Jazzy Flavors has some of the phattest most downtempo jazzy hip hop sounds with a tinge of trip hop. All three songs are worth the listen. Hip hop heads will not want to miss out on the opportunity to own this New Breed vinyl single. You can’t go wrong with vinyl singles from the New Breed Records label. Sounds from this single will automatically remind you of Golden Era hip hop. Gotta love that real hip hop shit!


ADL - Daddy is one of the phattest most definitely dope hip hop songs off this single! You definitely do not want to miss out on or skip this song. This is one hard hip hop track. Who knew Swedish hip hop could be this dope?

The girls call ADL “Daddy”. The girls call him daddy because he’s got it going on. His clothes get torn every time he rocks a show. He knows all the tactics. ADL has the phattest kick known to mankind. He puts up a fight like a knight in Cesar’s palace. Everything he does is totally taboo. He’s a smooth daddy.

ADL plays the cards with an open hand. So don’t try to deceive him. He can get the skins. So don’t worry or be afraid. You’re getting what you came for. ADL will leave you all shook up like Elvis. Momma’s little boy was a dirty little devil. Too many pornography flicks took his ass to another level. Everything he does is totally taboo. He’s a smooth daddy.


Falcon - Oh My God is one raw jazzy hip hop instrumental. Word cannot describe how good this song really is. Jazz Not Jazz - Move Y'All is another one of those raw jazzy hip hop instrumentals. Elements of bebop jazz are added to the song.

The limited edition DJ BMF ‎– Bringin' Mad Flava EP has some of best classic New York styled breakbeats and scratches with a style that is a mix of hip-hop, soul, & jazzy beats. DJ BMF ‎– Bringin' Mad Flava EP was one of the best New Breed releases from 1996.

Like This Y'All (Hi-Fi Remix) is one of DJ Smash’s best remixes and one of DJ BMF’s best remixes. The Hi-Fi Remix of Like This Y'All uses a tempo of 110 BPM while the original version of Like This Y'All uses a tempo of 100 BPM. Perfect on the dance floor. Like This Y'All (Hi-Fi Remix) is much better than Like This Y'All (Original Mix). Both Like This Y'All (Hi-Fi Remix) and Like This Y'All (Original Mix) compromise the A side of the EP.

The B Side of the EP has perfect instrumental songs for DJs who like sampling sounds, soulful vocals, and different beats. Keep Ya Guessin' and Nobody compromise the B side of the EP.

Various ‎– Sounds Of The Urban Jungle is a unique New Breed release because this New Breed release was a tribal house single. New Breed hardly ever released any tribal house music because the label’s primary focus was on releasing jazz and hip hop records. Anyway this breathtaking tribal house single is worth the listen. The Sounds Of The Urban Jungle leave much to be desired. Wetribe - Hard On has a tribal groove over a heavenly strong Afrocentric rhythm. It is inane how this heavily slept on this song was back in the day. D-Grinders - Koka uses a barrage Afrocentric tribal beats and house sounds.

The Khromozomes ‎– Buttermilk Biscuits EP is a prestigious masterpieces of trip hop and jazz. The sound is similar to Nujabes and Five Deez. The EP has that dope jazzy and groovy mid-90's underground street sound. Not to mention vibe. Not surprising since this vinyl EP was released by the New Breed label. New Breed releases never fail to disappoint. The release is similar to  Khromozomes ‎– The Sugar Cuts.

The L is one of the prestigious masterpieces from producers The Khromozomes recorded during the mid-90’s. The beats and bass are jazzy of course.

I'm Straight is another one of the prestigious masterpieces recorded by The Khromozomes during the mid-90’s which unfortunately got overlooked and overshadowed. The song has a warm hazy vibe.

Orpheus has that dope laid back jazzy sound and vibe due to the upright bass and xylophones which are used. Orpheus has that Boom Bap feeling also. Fans of old school hip hop and rap will definitely enjoy listening to Orpheus.

C-Swing - Urban Kinetics EP is a unique mellow downtempo hip hop EP filled with breaks and beats which is a perfect tool for DJs. Sadly this EP is quite difficult to find as this release was pressed up as a limited edition. So buy this EP if you can. British hip hop and R&B producer C-Swing composed a downtempo jazzy EP with some of that British hip hop flavor. Boom Bye Bye is a mid tempo jazzy hip hop song backed by a jazzy horn and heavy boom bap beats. The vibe is slow for a mid tempo jazzy hip hop song though. Angel is one of the more calming songs on the EP laced with an electronic trance sound.

DJ Smash ‎– Presents The Party Platter EP was the taste tester and vinyl sampler of/for the full album of DJ Smash ‎– Presents The Party Platter which was released in 1995. DJ Smash ‎– The Party Platter EP is one of the most genuine release from legendary DJ Smash. His sound and style brings a breath of fresh air to music. His DJ and turntablist skills leave much to be desired. Hip hop meets acid jazz on this EP of his. He puts his own spin on this album by using and incorporating different styles of music.

Moodulator uses such a calm relaxing keyboard which fits in with the rhymes sounds and rhythm. This tune will have your head nodding. His puts his own spin on this quality music. The beats are super thick. Jazz meets hip hop on Moodulator.

DJ Smash puts down his own jazzy touches and composition over hip hop beats on the song Gettin' Dizzy. He also blended in an incorporation of trip hop to give the song a try vibe nonetheless. Those beats and jazzy sounds make the song memorable.

You can hear a drum kit over hip hop breakbeats on Say Ow. This is one of the more hip hop oriented cuts on the EP. DJ Smash seemed to have been influenced by the sounds of James Brown, Little Richard, and Simply Red which is why you hear random funk breaks all over the place on Say Ow. The guitar gives away the funk.

The album Lil Za - Youngest Balla Of Them All was released in 2005 on BOC Records (BOC Entertainment) from Tyler, Texas, US. It’s a children’s music album filled with rap and pop. Pop rap meets children’s music with gritty Dirty South sound on top of a friendly vibe. Youngest Balla Of Them All was Lil Za’s sophomore debut.  Lil Za is the best in East Texas rap next to Lil Tec, Lil Twist, DJ Nasty, Pimp C, Bun B, DJ DMD, Boonie Locc, USC, 903, UGK, and Texas Playas among others.


Welcome Back reintroduces us to Lil Za again. It had been 2 years since his debut album No Pass No Play was released in 2003. No Pass No Play was Lil Za’s first album that was released on BOC Records (BOC Entertainment). Young Money signee Lil Twist was featured as well. The beginning samples John Sebastian - Welcome Back with an updated sound and production. The production is beautifully orchestrated. Lil Twist is Lil Za’s older brother and they were both signed to Nico Hernandez’s label BOC Records in the early 2000’s.

L*i*l*z*a is a Lil Za solo track. L*i*l*z*a explains the personality and persona behind Lil Za as both a regular citizen and pop artist. The track L*i*l*z*a is down south rap that speaks for itself.

Youngest Balla features Houston rap icon Lil Keke and Baton Rouge rap artist Lil Trill. Lil Za raps for the bulk of its duration for 2 minutes long. Lil Za is the youngest balla of them all and he says that with pride. Nico Hernandez produced and arranged the horn selection.

Lil Za covers Nelly - Juice in the track Jungle Juice. It is a pop rap freestyle. That is why Jungle Juice has a Midwest twang. The beats are absolutely nuts as the whole track is wild. Lil Za truly shines by himself in such a genuine fashion on Jungle Juice.

Twist & Za is a Lil Za and Lil Twist duo cut the two of them freestyle. Get Buck is a Lil Za freestyle. We Some Ballas is a Houston style influenced rap song.

Lil Twist and Lil Za cover Fat Joe - Lean Back on the track Lean Back. It’s another Lil Za and Lil Twist duo cut. However Lean Back is only 2½ minutes long though.


Round & Round Remix is a remix of Round & Round from the 2003 album No Pass No Play. This version and the original song were written in 2002. Lil Za wrote all of the lyrics by himself when he was 8 years old. Lil Za covers the children’s music song Wheels On The Bus. Round & Round was the first single for the No Pass No Play album that had a music video to promote the single and album.

The Underground Committee - Tight Revenue is a tight ass album with off da hook lyrics. This is rap music at a new level as each song uses a different style. True Down South rap fans will enjoy this album as these 11 solo artists united to record every song with a different style prepared with distinctive lyrics and unique styles of flowing.

The whole album was produced by Lower Than Underground Productions. DJ's Spanx and Apollo did a bulk of the production. Southern Kumphert produced some songs too.

Spanx designed the album’s artwork and cover for the record label. You can see the gold and diamond's details in both the retail version & degraded version. The jewelry details are what helped make this album stand out in a flashy sense of relevancy.

The album was a great success in the underground scene across San Antonio. The album sold successfully at clubs and carshows in San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Around 12,000 flyers and posters of the album were distributed and passed out.

"Coming from the South Side of San Antonio" is more than a mere quote from another underground rap group, but is now some sort of chant that is faith fully recited by many in the streets of San Antonio. It is also were Last Hour Records was founded.

Bangin Trunks uses thin beats rather than usual barrage of thick heavy beats you are accustomed to hearing in Southern rap. Moving on UP is making moves in the games. There is no limit when you are moving on up. This is one hard ass song.

Shawty Pimp came real with it with his slick yet esoteric pimp raps on his 1995 Comin’ Real Wit It. He brings out the best in Memphis pimp rap on songs such as Kickin’ Pimpin’ and Play No Playa. While you got your average Memphis rap songs such as Gotta Make A Killin,  My 9 Glock, and One Mean Stain. Despite any shortcomings or flaws, Comin’ Real Wit It is certainly a Memphis classic which does not get the respect or recognition truly deserved.


Shawty Pimp and Reddog break us off something proper with their classic witty lyrics on Break You Off. Reddog picks up from where he left off on Break You Off. And can't nobody but the big boys dig this shit. You know what I'm saying? They’re gonna kick some pimpin' for you niggas out there. And for you pimpin' ass niggas out there.

Shawty Pimp raps the repetitive and catchy lyrics to the hook. Repetitive catchy hooks are common in Memphis rap songs.

Shawty Pimp uses his slick yet esoteric pimp raps on Kickin’ Pimpin’. That is what makes this song of his an undeniable classic yet an under-appreciated Memphis rap classic. Can't nobody but the big boys dig this shit. You know what I'm saying? They’re gonna kick some pimpin' for you niggas out there 'cause it ain't gonna never die. And for you pimpin' ass niggas out there.

Shawty Pimp is just smoking sacks and drinking yak with Mista K and Reddog. He is kickin' back like a man. Some niggas are all around their motherfucking hall. Killing when they get them bitches on that motherfucking track.

Riding in the Cutlass thing, sweating up on them bitches, mane. See you gotta understand that this is just a pimping game. Shawty Pimp gotta play the bill 'cause a real nigga is trill. Booming yay so you know a true ass nigga making bills. Best believe Shawty Pimp is nevеr falling short.

One Mean Stain deals with being trapped in an endless cycle of poverty. Shawty Pimp is trapped. One Mean Stain relies heavily on the sample of Roy Ayers Ubiquity - Everybody Loves the Sunshine.

Shawty Pimp has a lot on his mind as he is trying think of what to do. Shawty Pimp is broke as a motherfucker. There ain't no money coming through. It's been like this for a couple of weeks. He has think of a plan before he kills the next man. With a Glock in hand, he’s a wild man caught up in this life of crime. Shawty Pimp is about to get this man. Shawty Pimp has been trailing his ass for fifteen minutes. He waits in the driveway. The driveway leads up to a big ass house in Germantown. He took his dope and money too 'cause that's what a pimp is supposed to do. He also took his wedding ring. A nigga known for everything.

Shawty Pimp is now out looking for more hoes to trick. So I pulled out his .44, rushed the door, and threw them down.

Shawty Pimp - H. A. N. uses some simple beats which are the hardest beats you will have ever heard. The beats are quite dark and sparse. There is not too much distance or white noise between beats. The beats are simple overall. You don't need a big studio to make some raw shit like this. However there seems to be a timbre in his vocals as some of the audio is unbalanced. This album is dope despite the low quality production. In fact the low quality production what makes this album legendary and grimey.

Lo Key ‎– Test My Nutz one of the low quality gems of Memphis rap that is very much overlooked. This is one of the coldest cuts outta Memphis. That’s not surprising since Lo Key is Tommy Wright III’s cousin. M.B.D. did produce some of the beats and drum patterns. This album uses some of the some of the best drum patterns in Memphis rap. Lo Key uses triplets with natural progression over slower beats.

This song carries a nice bass line over ultra loud heavy hitting beats produced by DJ KLC. This song is so raw and gritty.

Got What It Takes To Make It uses a New Orleans styled Dixieland jazz horn sample in the background over heavy turntablism and ultra thick heavy beats produced by DJ KLC. Jazz meets hip hop rap on Got What It Takes To Make It. The original version of this song is and was better than remix. This version has some of that old school hip hop sound and flavor inside.

Platinum Hook ‎– Ecstasy Paradise is an unreleased Motown album that only got issued as a test pressing on vinyl. Possibly for radio stations and music critics. Sadly Motown decided not to release this album because the disco era had come to an end by 1980 and a lack of charting singles. Disco was no longer popular and R&B/soul was already becoming a trending genre. The entire album is definitely funky.

Light As A Feather is funky disco instrumental backed with several layers of instrumentation. The horn selection, bongos, guitars, synthesizers, and keyboards. Horn selection helps this song prosper and stand out. Tongue clicking adds into the funky 70s disco sound. Listen closely.

Good to you is killer boogie funk. The song was a prime example of 80s funk that was coming from Detroit at the time this song was recorded.

Dancer is a funky groove and can do numbers on the dance floor. The song incorporates elements of dance, boogie, funk, and disco in one recording. Platinum Hook has that platinum touch when it comes to laying down the funk.
