Mystery behind the gas station at RR 620 and Broadmeade Avenue in Austin, Texas revealed.

Word about this gas station has been buzzing around Reddit and the world of urban exploration about a former gas station. Many Austinites have been wondering what the gas station building located at the one way intersection of RR 620 and Broadmeade Avenue in Austin, Texas once was and why no business is currently occupying this space. Well news article will explain the mystery behind of why this gas station has been sitting vacant. This gas station was originally a U-TOTE-M which later became a Circle K station and store.

Construction for this building began in 1980 on the corner of RR 620 and Broadmeade Avenue. A slab foundation was used. This Fairmount Foods store and gas station opened the same year. RR 620 was still a two-lane road/highway back when construction of this store was in progress.
The store operated at this location until 1983 when Fairmount Foods merged with U-TOTE-M. Of course U-TOTE-M claimed naming rights. The name of the store changed from Fairmount Foods to U-TOTE-M. Their bold lettered sign replaced the older sign that was once there. 2 gas station fuel pumps were located on the southeast corner of the store building. A canopy was placed over the two fuel pumps. 1983 was the year U-TOTE-M began operating at this location. Fairmount Foods sold the property to Provident Bank in 1984. Provident Bank sold the property to Circle K in 1985.

However this would not be the last time this property would be sold. Circle K sold the property to a corporation called AGHF Corporation on the date of 8/4/1994. AGHF Corporation sold the property to a man named Sajjad A Salemohmed. He operated this store for more than 20 years. (Ref: https://search.wcad.org/Property-Detail?PropertyQuickRefID=R063459)

This building has been heavily remodeled over time as the years went along. Exactly when the pumps were removed is unknown.

The store had moment of a brief revival after toll road SH 45 opened in 2007, but that didn't last very long. Yet however this store has seen more than one revival.

Appearance of EZ In & EZ Out Grocery was run down by 2007. Some people say the interior of this store was in terrible condition. This would lead owner Sajjad A Salemohmed to promptly shut down EZ In & EZ Out Grocery in August 2007 and start the renovation process for this building which lasted a year. EZ In & EZ Out Grocery was colloquially referred by locals and Austinites to as an “old store” or a run down store.

The store looked abandoned in August 2007. However that was not the case at all. All items were removed from the store during the renovation process as Sajjad A Salemohmed and the construction company he hired were working to make the store look nice.

The store reopened as the nice EZ In & EZ Out Grocery in 2008 after being significantly remodeled and altered. EZ In & EZ Out Grocery operated at this location from 2008 to 2011. The fuel pumps had already been removed by then.

The store was revived again as Get N Go Food Mart and operated at this location from 2012 to the beginning of 2017. Get N Go Food Mart stayed open for business longer than EZ In & EZ Out Grocery, GAMA, and Fairmount Foods did. The square building had been significantly altered and remodeled again. The sign over the canopy was much smaller in size.

The people who owned Get N Go Food Mart were very nice. So were the employees who worked there were. There was not of a lot stock though. Half of the time they would have something and half the time they didn't. Customers say the store always smelled weird. The inside smelled like dirty mop water.

Now the final time this store would be revived was in March 2017. GAMA operated at this location from April 2017 to June 2019.

June 2019 is when this store was abandoned and remains so to this day as of 2020. The parking lot is being used as a dumping ground for trash. A yellow ice cream truck can seen sitting on cinder blocks in front of the building right near the frontage road of SH 45 and RR 620.

Basically the store is now boarded up and is up for lease. The building is not too far away from being condemned by the City of Austin and Williamson County.

Here is what led to the decline of this store.

Construction of toll road SH 45 made accessibility difficult for Get N Go Food Mart to stay in business for very long. SH 45 cut off the easy access Get N Go Food Mart once had. SH 45 overlapped RR 620 and had spilt that highway into 2 different access roads during the construction process. The lack of accessibility is what killed business for this store. Before SH 45 was there you could take a left onto Broadmeade Avenue if you were headed towards US 183 or RR 620.

A CEFCO was built right down the highway and is a much cleaner store around 2018. Locals refer to CEFCO as “super nice and clean” as the inside is clean. The cleanliness and nice environment is what drew customers from this store to CEFCO.

This store and gas station can be looked at as a failed business investment due to a change in traffic patterns, lack of accessibility, location, and toll road construction. These are the reasons as to exactly why this particular store has been abandoned and will remain so.

The TV series American Crime used this store as a set from 2015-2017. Film trucks parked down the street to avoid being seen or harassed. Police had to stay during filming as they kept getting calls from the production company and film crew. Timothy Hutton and Felicity Huffman were seen on the set.

American football TV show Friday Night Lights shot some of their episodes here. Film trucks parked down the street to avoid being seen or harassed by fans. However they only filmed a few episodes at this store and not a whole season.
