Barton Creek Cave No. 2 is one of the lesser known caves of Austin/Travis County. This news article will explain the history and geology behind Barton Creek Cave No. 2.
Barton Creek Cave No. 2 was discovered by James Reddell, Bill Russell, Dick Reed, Charles Whitman, and Bill Irving in the spring of 1960. All of whom were members of Texas Speleological Survey. They were the first to explore Barton Creek Cave No. 2. (Ref: https://www.texasspeleologicalsurvey.org/PDF/TSS_Volume1/TSS%201(1)%20compressed.pdf)
A cliffside cave called Barton Creek Cave No. 2 is visible to the naked eyes from a far distance from Barton Creek in Barton Creek Preserve. This cave is just upstream from Barton Creek Cave No. 1 on Urban Assault Wall, just 80 feet above creek level. The crawlway inside this cave is about 75 feet long in diameter. Barton Creek Cave No. 2 is located on the same cliff as Barton Creek Cave No. 1 and Barton Creek Cave No. 3. Barton Creek Cave No. 2 is 40 feet up from Barton Creek Cave No. 1 and 80 feet above creek level. The entrance is 30 feet south of Barton Creek Cave No. 1. The cave ends in a flowstone bank and empties into Barton Creek.
The high distance above the ground makes accessibility difficult for many people. Even cavers have a hard time climbing to get into Barton Creek Cave No. 2. One you reach the outside of this cave, you will be able to see a beautiful view of Barton Creek Preserve and Gus Fruh Park itself. The view from looking outside this cave is similar to an aerial view.
Now the rock formation of this cave is native limestone. Many caves in Central Texas have a rock formation of native limestone.

ReplyDeleteI wasn't able to get to the cave so high up. I only reported about what I saw in person and what I researched online.
