Mixerr Album Reviews #2,196

Louis Armstrong & His Big Band - On the Sunny Side of the Street is perfect example of Dixieland jazz which had originated from the days of early jazz. The sounds of early jazz leave much to be desired by jazz fans. Some of the songs seem improvisatory as the album was compiled together by his label. Similar to modal music. Now this album is one of the harder albums to find from Louis Armstrong online or offline. The rarity of this album is a product of interest for jazz fans. The album has 25 original recordings.

Paper Doll features The Mills Brothers as guest stars on the clarinet section. That is the other highlight for this album.

Louis Armstrong plans to but a paper doll her can call his own. A doll that other fellows cannot steal. This paper doll has flirty eyes. She will be waiting for him when he comes home. She’ll be the most loyal doll in the world from his perspective and outlook.

He’d rather have a paper doll to call his own than have a fickle minded real live girl in the flesh. 2D is better then 3D because 2D never betrays you. That is what the stunning lyrics “Will have to flirt with dollies that are real/She'll be the truest doll in all this world” stand for. He has more than a million dolls.

However the relationship with his paper doll did not last very long. He quarreled with Sue and is now blue. She's gone away and left him just like all dolls do. It’s tough to be alone. It’s tough to love a doll that's not your own. He is through with all those paper dolls.

The song On the Sunny Side of the Street does have lyrics as people would have you believe. Louis Armstrong performed by playin the trumpet by. The song is backed by a trumpet instrumental. This is some of the best from jazz virtuoso Louis Armstrong.

The lyrics to the song tell us to look at the bright side when things are getting grim. Leave your worries behind.

Grab your coat and grab your hat baby
Leave your worries on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
On the sunny side of the street

Can't you hear that pitter-pat there?
That happy tune is yours now
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street

I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade
But I'm not afraid baby
My rover, crossed over

If I never have a cent
I'll be rich as Rockefeller
With gold dust at my feet
On the sunny side of the street

Rose Room features clarinetist Barney Bigard and Gil Cuppini on drums. Barney Bigard takes control of most of this song with his clarinet. The song is performed in a musical hall style.

I rate this album 5/5*****!
