Scheffel School is one of the rural schools of Seguin and Guadalupe County that have been forgotten with time and not so much in documentation. That is because there has been much information about this school which was saved in documentation form. This news article will explain the history behind Scheffel School. Old-timers remember that Scheffel School operated from 1899 to 1946.
Scheffel School was constructed in 1899 on the outskirts of Seguin, Texas. The school later opened that same year. Willie Seay was the first teacher to teach at this school. Miss Ella Meyer was the second teacher to teach at this school. She lived in the teacherage that on the campus property. Many former students remember walking 3 miles or more on muddy roads to attend Scheffel School. Many children had attended this school before consolidation. Students only received so much formal education at Scheffel School. Everything else in life was taught in the home and what working at a job taught them. Scheffel School educated students in Kindergarden to 7th grade. School stopped after the 7th grade. Students had to travel to Seguin to attend higher level classes.
1946 is the year Scheffel School closed. Students were transferred to the McQueeney School in 1946 after Scheffel School closed.
A Scheffel School reunion was held at Country Cabaret on the date of 04/12/2001. Twenty nine alumni from the Scheffel School recently gathered at Country Cabaret for the first Scheffel School reunion. The alumni voted to have another reunion the next coming February. A fund was started for the Scheffel School sign to be placed at the site and property where Scheffel School once stood. Many reflected on country school life. Today part of the old Scheffel School building has been demolished because a rancher has used their farmland property for their own private airfield. The other part of the Scheffel School building was moved west of the airfield. A concrete landing strip which serves as a private airfield now takes place over the Scheffel School property. The site of the former Scheffel School was located on Old Stage Coach Road which is now called Stage Coach Road. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/13982950/)
