History of Meeks Cemetery in Manor, Texas explored and explained.

Not too much history is known or can be discovered about this long forgotten Manor cemetery. Only a few people know about Meeks Cemetery. Meeks Cemetery is regarded as a historic cemetery by many archeologists, researchers, and historians. Meeks Cemetery is known as Meeks Family Cemetery, Shiloh Littig Cemetery, and 41TV2307. Austin Genealogical Society has Meek Cemetery listed as an “African American cemetery”. (Ref: http://www.austintxgensoc.org/cemeteries/)

Meeks Cemetery was plotted in 1863 during Antebellum times of the American Civil War on property owned by Will Meeks. White slaveholders buried their slaves at this cemetery. Archeological investigations discovered this cemetery to be associated with the freedmen community of Webberville, Texas. (Ref: https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/72740124.pdf)

During the post-emancipation era around 1866 is when this cemetery was being used. The Meeks Cemetery was part of the Meeks homestead, an antebellum homesite. Will A. Meeks was possibly the first person to be buried in Meeks Cemetery as his death date dates back to 1866. His burial number is #15. A few more acres were acquired and purchased for lot space of graves.

The first most recent burial was a man named Dan Houston who died in 1953. He was a married negro man employed by JB Manor & Co prior to his death. He was the last person to have been buried in Meeks Cemetery. (Ref: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/179235043/dan-houston)

Will Meeks was another man buried inside this cemetery during the 1950s decade. He died in 1958. His burial is the most recent burial of Meeks Cemetery. Use of this cemetery was/had continued through 1960. (Ref: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/59808805/will-meeks)

Israel Edmersun of Dallas was the last person known to be buried at/in Meeks Cemetery. The date of his burial was February 25, 1981. Israel Edmersun died at age 92 on February 18, 1981. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/53651556/obituary-for-israel-edmersun-aged-92/)

Use of this cemetery was discontinued by 1990. There have been no recent burials or grave since then. Today Meeks Cemetery is located on private property and is a part of the Munkebo Farm.
