Short history of Evelyn Cemetery explored. A cemetery nearly forgotten and underused.

Evelyn Cemetery is one of the many forgotten cemeteries of Travis County and Creedmoor. Sadly not much history is known about Evelyn Cemetery. This news article will explain the history behind Evelyn Cemetery.  Evelyn Cemetery is a private cemetery owned by the city of Creedmoor, Texas.

Evelyn Cemetery was established and plotted on land donated owned by John B. Oatman between Creedmoor and Niederwald in 1894 about 1 mile east of US 183 on Evelyn Road. This cemetery was located on land defined as Oatman’s Pasture. (Ref: 1986 TCHC Cemetery Survey)

The earliest burials date from 1902 to 1924. This cemetery was specifically used for burials of Mexican Americans (Hispanic people) mainly throughout much of the 20th century. Evelyn Cemetery would start appearing on the Creedmoor Quadrangle 3097-212 topographical maps beginning in 1952. (Ref: http://sanjose.philmullins.com/environment/)

Not many people know this factual bit of information and history but Evelyn Cemetery was one of several Mexican American cemeteries in Travis County. There are a total of 12 Mexican-American burials dating from 1904 to 1928 within Evelyn Cemetery. A windshield survey of the area confirmed the location of the cemetery. The grave of a Mexican woman named Agathia Mendoza is an example of one of the earlier burials/graves for this cemetery. Her burial is possibly the earliest burial/grave for this cemetery historically speaking. There are at least 22 graves from the 1920s at this cemetery. Today the cemetery is located on private land.

Evelyn Cemetery is located at 9302 Evelyn Road, Creedmoor, Texas, US 78610.
