Short history of Fire Station No. 5 in Galveston, Texas explored.

Galveston City Commission voted to have a new fire station constructed in 1904 because Galveston was in need of another fire station during this time. The Galveston City Commission purchased a parcel of land on Avenue K sometime during that year. A central fire station called Fire Station No. 5 was to be commissioned here. Fire Station No. 5 was constructed in less than a year. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/14162495/)

Fire Station No. 3 was shut down and decommissioned when Fire Station No. 5 opened up at 1614 Avenue K. Fire Station No. 5 was built to replace Fire Station No. 3. Fire Station No. 5 was commissioned to serve as a new central station at the location of 1614 Avenue K in Galveston, Texas in 1905. Here Fire Station No. 5 would serve as a central station for more than 50 years.

Sadly Fire Station No. 5 met its fate, demise, and closure in 1955. 1955 is when Police and Fire Commissioner Waller L. Johnston had Fire Station No. 5 decommissioned in what he called "an economy move." (Ref: Galveston Daily News, Page 47, Sunday, September 21, 1986)

Fire Station No. 5 was saved from urban renewal in 1996 when voters were asked to adopt urban renewal. The plans for urban renewal were  turned down by almost a 3 to 1 vote. So the City of Galveston used the building for office space. Fire Station No. 5 serves as offices for the City of Galveston currently. (Ref: Galveston Daily News, Page 14, Thursday, April 25, 1996)

Fire Station No. 5 is located at 1614 Avenue K, Galveston, Texas, US 77550.
