Explaining the history of S.J. Guthrie Park in Waco, Texas.

S.J. Guthrie Park is a large 7 acre park tucked away in the northern portion of the inner city Brookview neighborhood of Waco, Texas.

The beauty of this large park is often overlooked. Tucked away from the corners of our minds. Many people overlook the nature and beauty surrounding and propagating this park. A long flowing creek connects directly into this park as this park is centered around a creek. This creek is a groove in the ground lined with concrete. Many oak groves and pecan tree grow allotted around this creek. S.J. Guthrie Park is surrounded by oak groves, pecan trees, and hackberry bushes.

S.J. Guthrie Park was originally named Brookview Park. Brookview Park was established and allotted in 1950. Sidewalks for this park were laid out and completed in 1951. The City of Waco has always owned this park.

Waco News Tribune summed up Waco’s park situation in two words, “totally inadequate” in their newspaper back in 1957. Brookview Park needed maintenance work and was listed on a list of 10 urgently needed neighborhood parks. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/48166879/)

Bids were accepted to purchase basketball facilities at Brookview Park on Edmond Avenue in 1977. Basketball facilities were installed the following year. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/65714063/)

Brookview Park renamed to S.J. Guthrie Park in 1987 after city council voted to renamed the park. S.J. Guthrie Park was named after S.J. Guthrie. (Ref: https://newspaperarchive.com/waco-citizen-mar-31-1987-p-1/)

Here is how one blogger describes S.J. Guthrie Park.

Waco – S.J. Guthrie Park is a groove in the ground lined with concrete, an attractive accent to an inner city neighborhood of well-kept homes that closely resembles a sun-splashed suburban setting.

The creek branch cuts across the streets at an oblique, shaded by native oak and pecan, hackberry and ash. The trimmed lawn and transplanted ficus trees are encircled by broad foot paths.

A painted wooden signpost points the way to an arched masonry pavilion with an interesting star-shaped roof pattern of four ridges and four valleys, an elaborate jungle gym, barbecue pits – all the amenities of a beautiful pocket park – proudly heralded by neatly lettered slats that show a visitor the way to each element of the setting.

That's how things look by day.
