History behind Juneau Junior High School in Juneau, Alaska explored.

Juneau Junior High School is one of the lesser known schools of Juneau, Alaska. This news article will explore and explain the history regarding Juneau Junior High School.

Juneau Junior High School was built in 1956 as a 2-story building with a full basement. Juneau Junior High School educated students in grades 8 and 9. And educated students in later 8 through 10. Juneau Junior High School eventually educated students in grades 7 through 10.

By 1957 Douglas Elementary School was getting overcrowded. There were too many students in one classroom and not enough moving space. So officials of Juneau Public Schools decided to move students from Douglas Elementary School to Juneau Junior High School. This was because Juneau Junior High School had enough room to accommodate growing enrollment. So in the fall of 1958, the 7th grade class from Douglas Elementary School was moved to what was the “new” Juneau Junior High School because the new Juneau High School opened by the boat basin. Interestingly Douglas Elementary School inherited the old Juneau High School building. (Ref: https://books.google.com/books?id=e9qADAAAQBAJ&pg=PT82&lpg=PT82)

In addition to the class from Douglas Elementary School, 7th grade classes from Juneau Elementary School and Auke Bay Elementary School were moved to Juneau Junior High School.

Juneau Junior High School had the first planetarium in the state of Alaska. Juneau Junior High School is notable for being the first public school to have ever hosted a planetarium in the state of Alaska. The planetarium was described as “a large-group instruction room” used for team teaching. (Ref: files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED020661.pdf)

Juneau Junior High School was shut down in 1997 when the State of Alaska began moving their offices into Capital School.

Juneau Junior High School was originally located on 128 5th Street, Juneau, Alaska, US 99801.
