Exploring Homestead Cave in Austin, Texas. One of Austin’s lesser known caves.

This news article will explain what Homestead Cave is. Homestead Cave is one of Austin’s lesser known caves located in the Balcones Fault Zone near RM 2222 and FM 620. Not too much is known about this cave.

Homestead Cave is tentative feature known to contain Tooth Cave ground beetles. Tooth Cave ground beetles have been confirmed to inhabit Homestead Cave. Homestead Cave is within the Jollyville Plateau KFR and is a tentative Tooth Cave ground beetle collection site. Homestead Cave was last explored on the date of April 11, 1995 by A.G. Grubbs and G. Waid of JCC. A.G. Grubbs and G. Waid of JCC sought out to observe and locate and fauna collections of Tooth Cave ground beetles in Homestead Cave. (Ref: http://www.mexicancaves.org/other/TMM_SM5.pdf)

However the occurrence of any other insect species in Homestead Cave cannot be ruled out. No other insect species are known to inhabit Homestead Cave.

The exact location of Homestead Cave is not certain. Homestead Cave has been described as behind a gas station and near a power-line right-of-way just north of RM 2222, east of the RM 2222 and FM 620 intersection. Homestead Cave is said to be located in a heavily wooded area on privately owned land far away.
