Some history of the Abilene Junior High School in Abilene, Texas explained.

Abilene Junior High School is one of the lesser known schools of Abilene, Texas. Hardly any history regarding this school can be found anywhere. This news article will attempt to explain the history behind Abilene Junior High School.

A site for the proposed new junior high school was discussed between the Abilene ISD and the city commission during a conference in 1941. News about the site for the proposed new junior high school was announced in the Abilene Reporter-News. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/45490951)

“The school board is to seek a conference with the city commission Friday to consider the matter of a bond election, and also discuss a site for the proposed new junior high school, Dudley said.”

Construction work on Abilene Junior High School began in 1942 during the 1942-1943 school year. Rose Construction Company was the contractor who built Abilene Junior High School. Construction work resumed on through 1942 until early 1943. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/44918234/)

Abilene Junior High School opened around 1944. Abilene Junior High School educated students enrolled in grades 7 through 9. School stopped after 9th grade.


Abilene Junior High School was absorbed and had merged into Lincoln Junior High School during the 1954-1955 school year in 1955. This decision was made after Abilene ISD decided to build a new “Abilene High School”.
