History of the Pflugerville Mercantile in Pflugerville, Texas explored.

Pflugerville Mercantile was established as a domestic for-profit corporation on the date of July 11, 1905. (Ref: https://opencorporates.com/companies/us_tx/0001454500)

William Pfluger was the original owner of Pflugerville Mercantile. Pflugerville Mercantile was incorporated with a capital stock of $10,000 on July 20, 1905. (Ref: https://books.google.com/books?id=lWE9AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA24&lpg=PA24)

The historic one-story building with high ceilings and a large percentage of the primary façade once housed the old Pflugerville Mercantile Store on Main Street was built in 1905. fill Pflugerville Mercantile sold dry goods, notions, hats, boots, shoes and fancy groceries.

The total area of the building is 4,488 square feet, with 3,000 square feet on the main floor, and 1,488 square feet on the mezzanine. The main entrance leads into a small entrance foyer; another door leads from the foyer into the open main floor, currently configured as a restaurant dining area. Immediately to the right of the entrance is a raised platform with a piano for performing artists. To the left of the entrance is a small waiting area with a wood ceiling over the original ceiling. A pastry counter at the end of the first floor dining area fronts a passage into the kitchen and bakery, and is adjacent to stairs that lead up to the mezzanine. The mezzanine looks over the dining area below, and is used mainly for private dining, storage, and office space. The mezzanine also has a small bar for private functions. The railing at the stair and mezzanine is a remnant of the steakhouse decor, added in the late 1960s. The walls are exposed brick (most likely plastered in the historic period), and partially covered with wood paneling. The original ceiling is a silver-colored pressed metal; deteriorated areas were replicated by the current owner and painted to match the original. An assortment of air ducts, fans, and light fixtures hang from the ceiling. (Ref: https://atlas.thc.texas.gov/NR/pdfs/12000788/12000788.pdf)

Doc's Place once occupied the space where Pflugerville Mercantile once occupied on Main Street back in 1981. Doc's had beer and atmosphere. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/379284107/)

Then in the 1980’s, the building was resurrected as The Dodge City Steakhouse through 1999 and then the European Bistro through 2012. With the Grand Opening of PBK Stem & Stein on October 5, 2012, this charming restaurant aims to honor the history and tradition of the building once again, rekindling the PBK name and the social spirit that once brought the residents of Pflugerville together in this exact location. PBK Stem & Stein now occupies the space where Pflugerville Mercantile once occupied. In the former European Bistro building off Main Street sits the historic building once used as the Pflugerville Mercantile. The rich history of Pflugerville is the main reason owners Shannon and Jeff Coleman bought the building and opened the speakeasy for the new millennium. "This 1-story brick building is the east section of the Pflugerville Mercantile Building, a survivor of the July, 1971 fire which destroyed all of the buildings to the west. The original building (or buildings) was composed of six bays of the same height, with a similar brick parapet and storefronts, allowing this remaining portion of the block to retain enough integrity to contribute to the significance of the district. Like the adjacent pharmacy to the east, the mercantile is a relatively tall single-story building, with high ceilings and a large percentage of the primary fa9ade filled with windows. The building lacks the ornament of its neighbors, but is nevertheless a handsome property, with an intact storefront reflecting common tum-of-the-century design solutions for urban and small-town retail establishments."
