History of Mitchell Lake School in San Antonio, Texas discussed and explored.

Mitchell Lake School is one of the forgotten schools of San Antonio and Bexar County. Not too much history has been preserved in documentation as not much history about this school can be found either. This school is only remembered in name. Mitchell Lake School was also known as Mitchell’s Lake School and the Asa Mitchell School.

In the 1850's, Asa Mitchell donated land from his grant to be used for the purpose of school facilities for the area. The school building was located in the settlement of Cassin. Mitchell Lake School was built and established south of San Antonio on Pleasanton Road. This school was said to be located near Mitchell Lake which is where the namesake for this school came from. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/39252545/)

Now the school building was a log cabin as this was common practice during the 19th century. This was not unusual for San Antonio. Mitchell Lake School was located in School District No. 87 also known as Mitchell Lake School District.

The school taught students in grades 1-8. 9th grade was added later. Classes for 10th grade and 11th grade students were eventually added as well. Mitchell Lake School was a 1-9 school much throughout the 19th century.

Mitchell Lake School was a thriving school and was located in a good school district by the end of the 1910s decade. The news made it in an article of the San Antonio Evening News. “Among the schools that have been doing especially good work are the Mitchell Lake School District.” (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/39269874/)

As the school district consolidation began to take effect in 1949, the school was abandoned with its students being sent to Thelma School (Thelma Elementary School). 1949 was the year Mitchell Lake School was abandoned. Today the school is no longer extant. School Annual. Mitchell Lake School was located on Pleasanton Road, San Antonio, Texas, US.
