History of Converse Mexican Cemetery explored and discussed.

This news article will explore and discuss some of the history behind Converse Mexican Cemetery which is one of the lesser known cemeteries of Converse, Texas.

Converse Mexican Cemetery was located on land that belonged to Willie Hoenecke and Alma Hoenecke. On the date of March 11, 1925, Willie Hoenecke and Alma Hoenecke deeded land to trustee Ben Martinez on a warranty deed. Ben Martinez was the trustee of Converse Mexican Cemetery during that time. Abel Gonzalez was president of Converse Mexican Cemetery and Trinidad Buantillo served as the secretary while Ben Martinez was the trustee. L. T. Baker was an acting officer.

Ben Martinez conveyed Converse Mexican Cemetery to L. T. Baker on the date of November 22, 1925 on a warranty deed. L. T. Baker let Hispanic citizens of Converse use the cemetery that was located on his property. (Ref: Bexar County Land Records, Document Number 309328)



 

Otto Kriewald, Lillie Kriewald, Bessie Kriewald, and Olga Stapper sold additional acreages of their to Ben Martinez for expansion of the Converse Mexican Cemetery on the date of December 3, 1929. Demensio Sanches was one of the successors to Converse Mexican Cemetery. (Ref: Bexar County Land Records, Document Number 309328)

The grave of Ben Hillert was moved to Converse, Texas from Wade Cemetery in Seguin, Texas sometime during the 20th century. (Ref: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~txguadal/cem/wadecem/wade.html)

There are some disturbing myths that surround this cemetery. An employee claims to have saw the glowing torso of a woman in the road by the Converse Mexican Cemetery moving towards their car. This could be a ghost. (Ref: http://www.ghostsofamerica.com/7/Texas_Converse_ghost_sightings9.html)

Converse Mexican Cemetery is located near 10410 Kneupper Road, Converse, Texas, US 78109. Converse Mexican Cemetery was originally located on Brooks Avenue facing Duncan Place facing Randolph Air Force Base as shown in the Bexar County Plats Records.
