An in-depth news article exploring the history of the Magnolia Sugar Plantation in San Antonio, Texas.

Magnolia Sugar Plantation is one of the lesser known restaurants of San Antonio, Texas. Not too much history is known about this restaurant. This news article will explain the restaurant’s brief history. 


The restaurant known as Magnolia Sugar Plantation was located on property owned by Robert S Richie along with Fred Gillespie and his family members. Magnolia Sugar Plantation was located in a separate mansion called the Magnolia Sugar Plantation Mansion. This mansion originally was a three-story plantation home that was restored to accommodate a capacity of 1,500 patrons. This mansion was located behind what is now WalMart. Magnolia Sugar Plantation was located at 6111 Northwest Expressway in San Antonio, Texas. The mansion occupied the same location of 6211 Northwest Expressway. 6211 Northwest Expressway was the same place as 6111 Northwest Expressway. Both addresses used the same location.

Magnolia Sugar Plantation applied and registered for a liquor license with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission in early December 1975. Magnolia Sugar Plantation was a fancy restaurant perfect for a romantic evening of wining and dining as listed in a news article written by San Antonio Express-News. There were cordial servers in all 7 dining halls a third-story bar. One of the main features was the Magnolia Oyster Bake, which was a very rich dish that created by a wonderful chef. However Magnolia Sugar Plantation would only operate for less than a year. Magnolia Sugar Plantation was involuntarily dissolved and shut down by the State of Texas on the date of July 18, 1976 due to tax forfeiture. (Ref: https://opencorporates.com/companies/us_tx/0036169800)

 

According to San Antonio Express-News, Magnolia Sugar Plantation was forced into liquidation. A domed oak grandfather dock, open-well wall clack, 7 oils on canvas, and New York gallery quality and custom framing were sold during the liquidation process on the date of Tuesday, November 30, 1976. After Magnolia Sugar Plantation was involuntarily dissolved and shut down by the State of Texas, the mansion became a site for a haunted house which was a March of Dimes Haunted House. However the March of Dimes Haunted House would not operate for very long as the inside caught on fire in 1981 thus leading the business to shut down immediately. Unsurprisingly this house became abandoned. The house became a hot spot for vandalism and arson. So much illegal activity took place there. Not too surprising since a lot of craziness happened at the home at one time.

The Magnolia Sugar Plantation Mansion was demolished in 1985. By 1986, there were no traces of the Magnolia Sugar Plantation Mansion left or remaining.
