Squirrel Nut Zippers - Beasts of Burgundy album review

Squirrel Nut Zippers - Beasts of Burgundy is a lively neo swing album with unique storytelling and songwriting that attracts audiences. Much of the storytelling in their songs reference are based off New Orleans culture. The album uses heavy influence of Dixieland jazz and swing jazz. Karnival Joe (From Kokomo), West of Zanzibar, Conglomeration of Curios, and Use What Mama Gave You are the exuberant highlights of the album.

Karnival Joe (From Kokomo) is fun filled action packed about a carnie from Kokomo, Indiana and The Circus Queen of New Orleans. Step right up and buy a ticket to the show.

Who's the bloke who's got the show girls all in a row? That would be Karnival Joe from Kokomo. Who's the man with the red right hand? He's ready for a showdown. Karnival Joe from Kokomo. He's the kind of cat that'll make you wish you'd owned him. Turn around and make you wish you'd never known him. Now people come from both near and far to see the homunculus in a jar.

Who's the chick who's got that shtick? She's got that dirty lowdown. The Circus Queen of New Orleans. People come to see the Circus Queen of New Orleans. Both the young and old. She shakes like jelly in a bowl. She's the kind of chick who makes you wish you owned her. Turn around and make you wish you'd never ever known her. Step right up and buy a ticket to that midnight show. She does the dance they call "Shalom. Maybe you could teach the wife at home!"

West of Zanzibar is a song about a place that you can have fun that is located west of the city of Zanzibar that is located on Zanzibar Island, Tanzania. This is one of their more adventurous songs with a wonderful vibe.

There's a place where you can go. It’s no matter where you are. When your spirit's feeling low, go west of Zanzibar. There is a hideaway across the sea is waiting there for you and me. There's no reason to cry. This is not goodbye.

There's no denyin' what the spirit craves. The minarets make silhouettes west of Zanzibar.  There is such an exotic, exciting refrain over there. Two lips like fragrant spices and flowers. A place to pine away each lonesome hour. West of Zanzibar. A hideaway across the sea.

The Brian Setzer Orchestra - The Dirty Boogie album review

The Brian Setzer Orchestra - The Dirty Boogie was one of the more livelier swing revival albums of the year 1998 which had such a significant live band that performed the live instrumentation and production on the songs to the album. The album uses a mixture of swing jazz and rockabilly you would hear in music from the 1950s.

Rock This Town uses a mixture fusion of swing jazz and rockabilly you would hear in music from the 1950s. The song is upbeat of course in par with the beats. Brian explains and sings about how him and his lady are going to rock this town tonight by having a good time through socialization.

Brian and his lady went out late Saturday night. Brian had his hair piled high and his lady just looked so right. They were looking as cool as can be. The night was still young. They needed to go have fun and socialize with each other. So Brian picked his lady up at 10 PM to go out for the night. His plan was to return her home by 2 AM. Her mama don't know what Brian has got in store for her.

They found a little place that really didn't look half bad. Brian had a whiskey on the rocks and change of a dollar for the jukebox. He put a quarter right into that can but all it played was disco. Brian tells his lady, “Come on pretty baby, let's get out of here right away. We're gonna rock this town. Rock it inside out. Make 'em scream and shout. We're gonna rock 'til we pop. Gonna roll 'til we drop. Rock this town. Rock it inside out.” They’re gonna rock this town. Rock it inside out. They will both make them scream and shout.

Brian and his lady are both having a ball just tearing up the big dance floor. There's a real square cat. He looks 1974. He looked at Brian once or twice. And you know there's gonna be a fight.

Dirty Boogie is an upbeat swing jazz sound with lively production and vibrant percussion. The orchestra was killing it on the horns. Those loud lively vibrant horns made the song stand out. Brian discusses how he has to lay down a boogie that is kinda mean on the song Dirty Boogie.

Brian has got a little boogie but it ain't too clean! It's real low down and it's kinda mean. The dirty boogie. When Brian gets low down, it's the dirty boogie for him. What's it called? The dirty boogie. They're shakin' their hips and scream and shout. Well you rattle and shake, you moan and groan. And do things I can't talk about. The dirty boogie! Catch my drift?

Nosey Joe is about a nosy man named Joe who is everyone else’s business but his own. Joe is one of those people who’s in everyone else’s business but his own.

There's a man in town all the women know who goes by the name of Nosey Joe. He doesn't care if they are married. Joe takes his pick as long as they're women, he's ready to stick his big nose in their business. His big nose in their business. Nosey Joe is the nosiest guy Brian knows. He ain't good lookin'. He ain't big and strong either. The guy's got a nose that's 4 feet long. His big nose in your business. Women, if you get too close, this man will drive.

Brian saw Nosey Joe just the other day. Nosey Joe tried to steal Brian’s gal away. He offered her money and love. She said, “Thank you sir, but please don't shove. Your big nose in my business.”

Old Nosey Joe finally lost his life messin' with Brian’s buddy's wife. Brian’s buddy caught him with his chick. Brian’s buddy chopped off Nosey Joe’s nose and now he can't stick his big nose in Brian’s business anymore.

This Old House is a rockabilly influenced swing song about an old house that has seen better days. The song is nostalgic and has sentimental value.

This old house has seen better days. This old house once knew its wife and children. This old house was home and comfort as they fought the storms of life. This old house once rang with laughter and had heard many shouts in the past. Now this old house trembles in the darkness when the lightning walks about. No one ain't gonna need this house no longer. No one ain't got time to fix the shingles or the floor. Nor to mend the window pain. This old house is gettin' shaky. This old house has seen the rain and the cold.

Mel Tormé - Comin’ Home Baby! album review

Mel Tormé - Comin’ Home Baby! is one hell of a jazz soundtrack album with a heavy jazz soundscape. Half of the album is love songs and the other half is a slice of life. The album captures the innocent nostalgic sound of the 1960s. Fans of jazz and easy listening will enjoy his smooth crooning voice. If you loved Mel Tormé - Swingin' on the Moon, then you will love this album.

The song called Hi-Fly is about people being to every kind of sound that exists about how the old ways of life have passed us by. Mel sings about how the old ways of life seem to have passed us by and about how life these days is in hi-fly. This is one of those slice of life which has actual substance and meaning.

People are walking round living in a daze high above the ground with their crazy ways all around the town by acting silly while they fly. They are acting silly while they fly. High fluting crowds with their foreign cars. People are getting in over their heads by living in the clouds and shooting for the stars they can never see.  Life is the way it oughta be. The old ways seem to have passed us by. These days life is in hi-fly.

Everybody's hip to every kind of sound. Every kind of sound comes from every lip. Everybody's down. Actin' dippy while they fly high.

These lyrics explain how old ways of life have passed us by and how people have forgotten the old ways of life by getting in over their heads by reaching for dreams they can never achieve. People are getting in over their heads by reaching for dreams they can never achieve.

Living in the clouds
Shooting for the stars
They can never see
Life the way it oughta be
Old ways seem to have passed us by
These days life is in hi-fly

The Lady’s In Love With You is a song where Mel explains all the signs of when a man loves a woman as the song was written from a man’s point of view. This song explains the signs of when a woman loves her man. All you men out there need to listen to Mel’s advice.

Men, if there's a gleam in her eye each time she straightens your tie, you know the lady's in love with you. If she can dress for a date without waiting, you know the lady's in love with you. You've got romance on your hands because the lady's in love with you. Well sir, here's just how it stands. You've got romance on your hands. That is how a man knows if a lady is in love with him. Those are examples of the signs of when a woman loves her man.

Moanin' is one of the sadder songs on album where Mel sings his sadness away in his crooner voice in a swing jazz tone.  Everybody knows that Mel is moanin'.

Mel finds himself moaning every morning. He is alone and cryin' the blues. He is so tired of payin' the dues. Everybody knows he is moanin'.

Everybody knows why he is moanin'. Every evenin' he is moanin' too because of all the trouble he sees.  Life's a losing gamble to him. He spends plenty of days and nights alone with my grief. He truly prays that  somebody will come and bring him relief.

Putting On The Ritz is a song about living in elegance and luxury while flaunting one’s wealth. If you're blue and you don't know where to go to, why don't you go where fashion sits by Putting on the Ritz? Over here, there are different types of people who wear different clothing a day. Co-pants with stripes and a cut away coat with perfect fits. That is Putting on the Ritz. Being dressed up like a million dollar trooper. Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper. Let's mix where Rockefeller’s walk with sticks or umbrellas in their mitts.

The Blasting Company - A History of Public Relations Dilemmae album review

The Blasting Company - A History of Public Relations Dilemmae is a jazz album which has abstractness that is just off the wall and out of this world. The songs are cryptic and entertaining. Each song uses a different style of music along with different subject matter and concepts. However the album entirely relies on jazz for the most part. Fans of jazz and folk music should definitely listen to this album. Each song and composition is worth listening to. The Blasting Company - A History of Public Relations Dilemmae is one of the lesser known gypsy jazz albums of 2010.

Hungry Klezmorim is a song about a group of people who are hungry and ransack some villages for food. Hungry Klezmorim was laid in the style of style of Klezmer, an old Jewish style of music from the country of Israel. Basically Hungry Klezmorim is Klezmer music meets jazz music.

The streets were gravelly and cracked. The sun spread blisters on their backs. The people are getting hungry. Hung begins to impair their judgement. The group woke up to the sun when it had gotten unavoidable. Their empty satchels silent and their stomachs were grumbling. They seemed the same. Or at least most of them.

The group saw the roof tops on a slope and no sign of power lines connecting to a village. Their hunger is fiercely now piecing in paramount as their judgement is getting increasingly impaired to common sense. A spitted goat was smoking. Suddenly they heard the sound of violins, The music playing was rousing and provoking. The group goes from house to house as they filled their bags. Their tired feet felt strength on wine and made to move once more. Their family and friends have danced for days since the group has returned.

Princess Andy was a jazz song written in the style of an early 1900s sea shanty that was sailing ballad. The song tells the story of a cruel shark fisherman who received the nickname “Princess Andy” after an incident where a shark bit him on the head and pulled him overboard. Princess Andy is a sinister individual with murderous intentions.

At the beginning of the song, Princess Andy had to cut the teeth out of the shark’s mouth to free himself. This left a visible crown of teeth and gums sticking out of his head thus leaving his with an unsightly appearance. At the end of the song, Princess Andy goes on to become a ghostly figure haunts the oceans in search of sharks.

There was a fisherman who loved to hunt the sea for sharks. He'd gut them with a crooked grin and shake their entails out into the foaming sea.

However one fateful day, a shark capsized his trolling boat in the ocean. The fisherman was tossed out with his bait and felt those dagger teeth sink into his skull. The wounds released his blood into the sea. And too he floated along with it. The fisherman drew his knife out of his sleeve and cut the lip line separating tooth from gum. He rode the vicious corpse back to the port. A crown of shark teeth on his head. Princess Andy had to cut the teeth out of the shark’s mouth to free himself. This left a visible crown of teeth and gums sticking out of his head thus leaving his with an unsightly appearance.

The long shore men in fear and awe. They called him Devil, called him God, and they called him “Princess Andy”. With a knife at his finger tips, he’ll cut a smile on your lips. He is sodden as a fish. A fog is creeping in like a barge. He watched the canal waters stretching out of the moon. Curling its reflection like the friendly disposition of Princess Andy.

By afternoon the sky was spewing hail. A cataract sun and ravens on the sails. The captain went right overboard upended by the gale. It fell it drove the deck into the belly of the ship. Waves swarmed like hyenas scrapping for a carcass. His face grew dim as the blade slipped from his teeth.

The song Madame Selma is a song about wartime casualties.

Madame Selma keeps on smiling and selling postcards in the square. In all the photographs the Sun keeps on shining. And you can bet she's there. One life coated in glossy color. The other coated in dust and blood. You wouldn't think that she'd ever seen the difference.

It's been so long since her man's been gone. What a woe for a woman in love to have to smile alone. What a wonderful thing to have loved to have to die alone.

In Selma's cards there are no folks fighting. No tattered cloth on splayed out bones. Only the autumn painted forests and only the quaint old homes. But war stepped on our poor old door-steps. It's bloody boots on our welcome mat. And Madame Selma started singing a low song about her man. And it's been so long since the right kind of man tried to take her home.

And one day all the soldier's came. The wheat fields waved their healthy hands. The children ran their healthy hands. Reaching for their fathers' hands. And through the streets the music sings. Through all the tears the music sings.

Lucy Dixon - Lulu's Back in Town album review

Lucy Dixon’s Lulu's Back in Town is reminiscent of music by Ruth Etting, Peggy Lee, Fred Astaire, Little Violet, and Caro Emerald. Swing jazz meets jazz manouche with a bit of gypsy jazz on Lucy Dixon - Lulu's Back in Town. Much of her album has that swing jazz bounciness which is provided by an acoustic guitar. Notice the bounce in the acoustic guitar. The album has some fascinating jazz rhythms, beats, and instrumentation. Her album has cover songs over original jazz standards such as Nagasaki, Get Happy, and Fascinating Rhythm as well as original songs.

The song No Strings describes the freedom Lucy has as she has no strings that can restrict her movement on what she can do in her life. No Strings is backed by an acoustic guitar and that swing jazz bounciness. Notice the bounce in the acoustic guitar. Add that with a bit of tap dancing.

Lucy wakes up every morning with a smile on her face. Everything in its place the way it should be. She starts out every morning just as free as the breeze. Her cares are up on the shelf. There are no ties to her affections. There are no dates that can’t be broken. There are no words that can’t be spoken especially when she is feeling romancy. Like a robin upon a tree. Like a sailor that goes to sea. Like an unwritten melody. Lucy is fancy free and free for anything fancy.

Lucy tells gentlemen to dress up in their best fancy attire because she is back in town on the guitar and piano driven swing jazz ballad Lulu's Back In Town. The song sounds like a number of a 1950s Broadway play or musical that setting is based in the 1950s.

To all you gentlemen out there, dress up in your best fancy attire because Lucy Dixon is back in town. You gotta get your old tuxedo pressed. You gotta sew a button on your vest. You gotta shine your shoes and slick your hair. Get yourself a boutonniere. Because tonight you’ve gotta look your best. Lulu’s back in town.

You can tell all his pets and all his Harlem coquettes. Miss Otis regrets that he won’t be around. You can tell the mailman not to call. He won’t be coming home until the fall. And then he might not get back home at all. Lulu’s back in town.

Fascinating Rhythm is the upbeat jazz standard that guaranteed to get your feet moving and have you start dancing to the music. Lucy sings about how she has got this rhythm stuck through her head.

Lucy has got a little rhythm a that pit a pats through her brain. This rhythm is so darn persistent. The day isn’t distant when it’ll drive her insane. This rhythm comes in the morning without any warning and hangs around her all day. She’ll have to sneak up to it someday and speak up to it. Lucy hopes it listens when she says, “Fascinating rhythm. You’ve got me on the go fascinating rhythm.”

Lucy is all a quiver. The neighbors want to know why she is always shaking. Each morning she gets up with the sun and starts hopping. No work has been done. She knows that once it didn’t matter. But now she is doing wrong when she starts to patter. Lucy longs to be the girl with that fascinating rhythm.

GINKGOA EP review

The self-titled GINKGOA EP is the New York City meets Paris electro swing EP where the sounds of New York City jazz meet French electro swing. All of the lyrics their songs are sung and performed in the French language which makes everything sound so romantic.

Nicolle Rochelle is from New York City, New York. Antoine Chatenet is from Paris, France. Together they decided to make French songs with American vibes. American songs with a French touch where time periods cross and inspirations collide. Electro swing and jazz meet pop on this EP along with their ideas and concepts.

The song Machin Machine is about this beautiful French model who is a universal chic. The song is a Nicolle Rochelle and Antoine Chatenet duo.

Machin Machine is a beautiful French model who is a universal chic. She is not just a model. She is also a Nobel Prize. Damn she's beautiful. She does not care what about others says and what others think. What does the Emperor of China do while she dances? Who cares? What the crowd sings at what the redhead lady is wearing when the world is falling apart.

De New York à Paris is the New York City-Paris connection where New York City meets Paris and where the sounds of New York City jazz meet French electro swing. However Nicolle Rochelle sings throughout most of the song. Nicolle sang about how she fells in love with a jazz singer whom she met in her hometown of New York City, New York. Her heart leads her to move to Paris, France since her lover is originally from there.

In the black and white of Times Square, it is without a doubt that Nicolle prefers the pink and green flower gardens along with the old suburbs in the light. There was a jazz singer she knew. The missing blue note rom Manhattan. From its avenues which she came. Nicolle fell in love with this jazz singer. From New York to Paris, her heart has chosen Paris, France to live in since her lover is originally from there. Nicolle is his for the rest of her life. His dazed look. His big green and gray eyes are what she loves about him.

Nicolle moves forward with her eyes wide open. Nicolle is curious about everything. Excessive love is over. She want beauty and romance like in an old Abel Gance movie. And she dances from New York to Paris. Endless memories are in the air. More than picking them to worry about. Ordinary story coats that keep you warm even in winter.

Dolorès is the horn driven jazz song backed with electro swing production. The horns used make the song very lively and vibrant. All of the lyrics are sung in French no doubt.

Last Tango is the closer to the GINKGOA EP which uses a mixture of jazz instrumentation and electro swing production. All of the lyrics are sung in French of course. Nicolle Rochelle takes control of the song as she lets her vocals and singing prosper. Nicolle Rochelle sings throughout most of the song.

Tallulah Goodtimes - Interstellar Swing album review

Tallulah Goodtimes - Interstellar Swing is a time period minded electro swing album where vintage jazz meets modern electro swing with an energetic romp and edge. Tallulah Goodtimes experimented with recorded music and live instrumentation inside the production throughout the album. Notice how the gypsy jazz guitar riffs meld with live brass horns and the kick drums mold into the bass lines that reverb. This creates an intergalactic stellar supernova of sound.

Tallulah Goodtimes shows her audience and listeners some interstellar intergalactic universal love on Universal Love. This song was dedicated to those throughout the universe. Tallulah will be universal loving you.

If everything was from the stars and we are just some cosmic dust, then what is Tallulah’s is yours is ours. In Universal Love she trusts. Lead Tallulah to where the bright lights dazzle by the Winter Garden Lake. Join her where the jazz bands jazzle swirl her in the Shimmy Shake. She’ll endure the ice cold air. Lead her where the bright lights dazzle by the Winter Garden Lake.

Tallulah wants people to forget about their cares, worries, and troubles by engaging in some old fashion swing dancing with her to some good old interstellar jazz and electro swing music on the time period minded All I Wanna Do Is Swing. Vintage jazz meets modern electro swing with an energetic romp on All I Wanna Do Is Swing also.

Come as you are. You’re looking fine. You’re looking swell. Take Tallulah’s hand. Let’s run away tonight. We’ll adventure here and there. Forget your worries and forget your cares.

Swing her round. Swing her low. Swing her to the places that she wants to go. Tallulah want to take a chance on an old fashioned dance. All she wants to do is swing. She wants to engage in some old fashion swing dancing with her to some good old interstellar jazz and electro swing music. You could be king and she could be Queen. The finest pair you’ve ever seen. Share the secrets of the night as we go

These lyrics are simply amazing.

Lead me where the bright lights dazzle by the Winter Garden Lake
Join me where the jazz bands jazzle swirl me in the shimmy Shake
Fold me in my furs and wrappers I’ll endure the ice cold air
 I'll be universal loving you

The song Billie is vintage 1920s jazz meets 2020s electro swing. The song Billie is about the finest flapper in town that was a dancer who was living a speakeasy life.

Billie was a bearcat. Billie was the finest flapper in town. She was the finest flapper in town with a copasetic chassis. The best around as she was the best there was around.

One night she was heading to the gin palace with hooch in hand (barrel-aged Kentucky whiskey or Bourbon) and dancing shoes. Billie was a lady on a mission that had nothing to lose. She had nothing to lose. She was a bearcat and a dancer living a speakeasy life. Out on the prowl with heat dripping from her brow.

She had a style. Her dazzling smile ruled the midnight ballroom along with the feathers and sequins in her hair. And a look that made you stop and stare. The way she moved was so sweet and smooth. She owned the midnight ballroom. She ain’t got no time for no double-crossing drugstore cowboy.

Billie was a girl looking for the real McCoy who had her heart broke and up in smoke The only way was up from here. After dancing with the devil she had nothing to fear. With moves that were the cats meow. She had a style which helped her rule the midnight ballroom and dance floor. And a look that made you stop and stare.

La Bouche Manouche Feat. Irene Serra - Roseland album review

La Bouche Manouche Feat. Irene Serra - Roseland featured the fabulous vocals of Irene Serra over a gypsy jazz style soundscape on a jazz manouche album. Think gypsy jazz on a French style jazz album. Many of their songs are guitar driven and backed with acoustics. The songwriting and storytelling is remarkable.

Rose Room is the nature inspired gypsy jazz song filled with nature and romance. Love is in the air here. Irene Serra sings about wanting to take her man into a little room where all the roses bloom called the Rose Room.

Irene Serra want to take her man to a little room where all the roses bloom called the Rose Room. She wants to lead him into nature's hall where every year the roses give a ball. They have an orchestra up in the trees. For their musicians are the birds and bees. They will sing them a song as they are strolling along.

In sunny Roseland, where summer breezes are playing. Where the honey bees are "A-Maying". There all the roses are swaying. Dancing while the meadow brook flows. The moon when shining is more than ever designing. Pining to be sweetly reclining somewhere in Roseland beside a beautiful rose.

The ball is over. Tulips start blooming and meet together. Their little kisses are so short and sweet. The lilies nod to the forget-me-nots when they're departing in their flower pots. But all the roses with their spirits high remain to love until they droop and die. And why shouldn't it be just so with him and with Irene?

Valse Des Lilas (Once Upon A Summertime) is a French jazz manouche song with lyrics sung in French. The son is about two people who are in love with each other. True love never dies as they say.

We can't live like you do. Of a memory that is no more than a regret. Without a friend and without another secret. Just a few tears. For these few pages of melancholy, you closed the book of your life And you thought it was all over. What will time turn until the last one? Lovers will have just as much. All the lilacs of May will never end to party in the hearts of people who love each other.
