Short history of Greman Free School (German Free School) in Austin, Texas investigated and explored.

This school is one of the forgotten schools and colleges of Austin/Travis County. This school is considered to be historic as Greman Free School (German Free School) is one of the oldest operating private schools in Austin, Texas.

The German Heritage School located at 507 West 10th Street in Austin, Texas has been determined to be the oldest continuous operating private school in the state of Texas and Austin.

The school building for Greman Free School was built in 1857. All the interior floors were concrete. The foundation was laid on a concrete slab. This school would be opened in 1858 as a private school that eventually became a charter school. Greman Free School (German Free School) was a college that taught classes in the German and English languages. The German Free School was the first school in Austin chartered by the Texas State Legislature.

Today the German Heritage School and German-Texan Heritage Society own the building and property. Housed in the historic German Free School, the German-Texan Heritage Society promotes awareness and preservation of the German cultural heritage of Texas by using and preserving this pre-Civil War era building.
