Open Door Gospel Church is one of the more forgotten churches of San Antonio, Texas that has been forgotten with time. This news article will discuss and explain the history behind this church.
Demencio G. Hernandez and his wife, Modesta Hernandez sold their property to a McQueeney-based church called Open Door Gospel Church on the date of June 8, 1990 on a warranty deed. Open Door Gospel Church would be based in the Meadow Wood Acres of San Antonio. (Ref: Bexar County Deeds, Volume 4843, Page 1280)
Jesse Rivera served as a pastor for Open Door Gospel Church for nearly 20 years as listed in a 1990 warranty of sale deed. Open Door Gospel Church would now own this property. (Ref: Bexar County Deeds, Volume 6328, Page 2061)
The church and the separated buildings were built in 1980 on a 19,513 square for lot with 3,200 square feet of space. There are a few property features. Now the large rectangular building upfront served as the church. The small wooden rectangular building out back served as a storage shed. Open Door Gospel Church would operate and hold religious services at this location nearly 20 years until 2006 when they relocated back to their main headquarters and central location in McQueeney. The church building was already abandoned and vacant by 2008.
The sheriff of Bexar County, Javier Salazar, confiscated the property from Open Door Gospel Church sometime in 2014 for whatever reason. 5 years later, the church property was put up for sale in The Hart Beat newspaper on January 15, 2019. (Ref: The Hart Beat, January 15, 2019)
The sheriff of Bexar County, Javier Salazar, confiscated the property from Open Door Gospel Church by virtue of a certain order of sale that was issued out of the 408th Judicial District Court in favor of Medina Valley ISD on May 2, 2019. An order of sale was issued out by Bexar County Court on November 25, 2019. Medina Valley ISD purchased the property and church building for the sum of $38,037.17 dollars on Tuesday, February 4, 2020. Ironically there were no delinquent taxes owed to any government entities. So the property was transferred to Medina Valley ISD as ordered by the sheriff’s deed on 2/11/2020. (Ref: Bexar County Deeds, Doc No. 20200034431)
Medina Valley ISD would own the property for a year until 2021. This property was recently sold on 1/27/2021 to Erasmo Vasquez and Elizabeth Vasquez on a trustee deed from Medina Valley ISD from a sheriff’s sale. (Ref: Bexar County Deeds, Doc No. 20210022957)
The Bexar CAD website now lists the DBA name for Open Door Gospel Church as “100% VACANT BUILDING IN POOR CONDITION”. So the buildings have been withering away in poor condition due to a lack of maintenance and upkeep for several years now. Today Open Door Gospel Church sits abandoned, vacant, and unused.
