John Henry Phelan, Sr founded and established Phelan Grocery Company at the corner of Park and Washington in 1913. John Henry Phelan served as president of Phelan Grocery Company from 1913 to 1926. In 1928, he turned over management of the wholesale grocery business to others and worked full-time as the secretary-treasurer for Yount-Lee Oil Company. The building which served as Phelan Grocery Company was built in 1912 as a 2-story brick faced building on a concrete frame with a wholesale grocers in the rear. The building then serving as Phelan Grocery Company was rebuilt in 1916 with fire proof construction. Curtain walls were established in 1916 as part of the fire proof construction. Phelan Grocery began dabbling into the coffee business by 1928. A trademark was established and registered in 1928. This trademark and logo was “Phelan’s Best”. Their symbol and logo was mostly red. It was in 1928 that Phelan Grocery established a grocery store and coffee shop in the city of DeQuincy, Louisiana. The Port Arthur News Newspaper ran an advertisement about their coffee which read, “WHETHER YOU PREFER TEA OR COFFEE YOU WILL FIND A NEW GOODNESS IN PHELAN'S BEST COFFEE AND PHELAN’S BEST TEA BUY A CAN OR PACKAGE TODAY FROM YOUR FAVORITE GROCER. MONEY BACK IF NOT SATISFIED.”
