History of Cashin & Miller explored.

Cashin & Miller is one of the forgotten hardware stores of Flint, Michigan. This news article will explain what Cashin & Miller was.



 

Cashin & Miller was established and organized by John C Cashin and Joseph A Miller at 417 Asylum Street near Downtown. They were the owners of Cashin & Miller. (Ref: https://books.google.com/books?id=iFUXAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA494&lpg=PA494&dq=%22417+Asylum%22+flint&source=bl)



A meat market had operated out of that location on Asylum Street for about two years until 1890. The meat market ceased operations in 1890. (Ref: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/genesee/bios/boomer904gbs.txt)

Somehow Cashin & Miller went bankrupt. So their property was put up for auction by order of the US Court on Friday, March 15, 1918. News and information regarding the auction was posted in the Detroit Free Press. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/118580806/)

[By order of the U. S. Court, in bankruptcy, I will sell the Hardware Stock of Fred J. Cook bankrupt, on Tuesday, March 19th, at 10:00 o'clock a. m., Central Standard Time, in store located at 417 Asylum St., Flint, Mich. Stock and fixtures inventory $13,468.70, and can be inspected by applying to the Custodian at 313 South Saginaw Street, Flint, Michigan.]

According to Polk's Michigan State Gazetteer and Business Directory, Flint Furniture Co was the new tenant of 417 Asylum Street. So John C Cashin and Joseph A Miller had sold the land to Harry Brockman (Harold Brockman) sometime during 1921. According to an advertisement from Detroit Free Press, Town & Country Upholstering had been occupying this space from 1964 to 1967. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/98685918/)



 

REAL TREAT POPCORN COMPANY (REAL TREAT POPCORN CO) had used this location from 2008 to 2013. REAL TREAT POPCORN COMPANY relocated to 145 West Lakeview Avenue in 2014. Right where Mofferr Food Services is today. (Ref: Genesee County Clerk/Register website database)



 

Kettering University acquired the property around 2014 and had all buildings demolished. The buildings had been sitting abandoned for many years by that point in time. Kettering University currently owns the property where Cashin & Miller was located on and operated out of.
