History about Pierson Market in Flint, Michigan explored.

Pierson Market was one of the lesser known yet well-remembered liquor stores in the city of Flint, Michigan. Pierson Market is one of the well-remembered liquor stores by longtime Flint residents. This news article will explore and explain the history behind Pierson Market.

Pierson Market was located in a large square shaped yellow building on East Pierson Road and Horton Avenue. This yellow building had served as a market and grocery store prior to 1989. Simon Khoshaba and Sulaiman Khoshaba purchased the commercial property from the market and grocery store in 1989.

Pierson Market was incorporated as a domestic for profit corporation as Pierson Market Inc on the the date of January 18, 1989 by Simon Khoshaba and Sulaiman Khoshaba. Pierson Market opened to the public in 1989. Simon Khoshaba and Sulaiman Khoshaba owned and operated Pierson Market for many years. (Ref: https://opencorporates.com/companies/us_mi/800372134)

Pierson Market Inc had an annual revenue of $300,000.00 with total employee count of just 2 employees. This amount of annual revenue was very typical of liquor stores in Flint. (Ref: https://www.dandb.com/businessdirectory/piersonmarketinc-flint-mi-14288945.html)

Pierson Market served the St. John neighborhood, Oak Park neighborhood, Industrial Market, and Dort Park neighborhood along with Buick Heights. Many Flint residents remember the SQUIRT LIQOUR sign located on the northwest corner of this market from back in the day. Pierson Market used those huge bags on the 40 oz’s of beers, local liquor, and imported liquor. Simon Khoshaba and Sulaiman Khoshaba would slide liquor to customers through a revolving door. That was when Flint was doing real big things.

Simon Khoshaba had been selling large bottles of malt liquor for $1.89 apiece in 1997. While he had never been robbed since buying the store 8 years prior during that time, he still had taken the precaution of installing 5 inch-thick bulletproof plastic shield from the countertop to the ceiling of his store. He slid food and liquor to customers through a revolving door. (Ref: https://www.nytimes.com//06/23/us/youngsters-hop-train-to-city-and-pay-dearly.html)

One of the most memorable and notable employees of Pierson Market was man named Sam O. Jones (Sam Jones). He worked at the Pierson Market for several years. Sam was always available to lend a hand when help was needed, lend an ear, and offer encouraging words of wisdom whenever needed. Pierson Market had seen its fair share of criminal activity. Now criminal activity was not unusual given the location where Pierson Market was.

For example a Flint man, who was known as the rooftop bandit, entered Pierson Market by cutting a hole in the roof. The 34 year-old Flint man was nabbed after a Flint police officer was called to the Pierson Market when an early Monday after an alarm sounded. That's when the possible solution to the cases practically fell into place. Flint Police found the rooftop bandit who was responsible for as many as 10 area breaking and entering cases in which someone entered stores by cutting a hole in the roofs.      “A Flint man picked a bad time to drop into a local market. Now, police think they've found the rooftop bandit, responsible for as many as 10 area breaking and entering cases in which someone entered stores by cutting a hole in the roofs. The suspect, 34, was nabbed after a Flint police officer was called to the Pierson Market, 1172 E. Pierson Road, early Monday after an alarm sounded. There was one time when a woman was stabbed several times in the leg at the Pierson Market at about 3:15 AM on January 31, 2003. (Ref: Flint Journal, Flint: Details sketchy about woman's stabbing, POLICE BLOTTER, January 31, 2003)

“A woman provided few details to police about how she was stabbed several times in the leg. Officers were called to the Pierson Market, 1172 E. Pierson Road, about 3:15 a.m. today and found the woman stabbed several times, police said. The woman, who refused to answer police questions, was taken to Hurley Medical Center where she was listed in critical condition this morning. Anyone with information about the stabbing may call Flint police at (810) 237-6900.”

Trash dumping accusations were often held against Pierson Market. Residents complained and accused employees of Pierson Market dumping trash on the side of the store and having trash spill into yards. However the owner was putting all his trash into his dumpster. (Ref: Flint Journal, Trash mystery needs a solution, March 31, 2002)

“Residents and an E. Pierson Road store owner are dumping accusations on each other about who's dumping trash near their properties. Janice Duncan, who lives on Pierson near Dort Highway, says patrons and perhaps employees of the next-door Pierson Market are and it's spilling into her yard. But the market's owner says he puts all his trash in his dumpster; if residents are finding trash on their lawns, it's not his fault.”

Pierson Market was also home to a mobile phone accessory shop called Simple Mobile which operated there from 2008 to 2014. Simon Khoshaba was the owner of Simple Mobile. The phone number for Simple Mobile was 810-785-8421. Both Simple Mobile and Pierson Market shared the same phone number. Hours varied due to seasonal reasons and holiday reasons. Simple Mobile relocated to another storefront in Flint in the year 2014. (Ref: https://www.partyunion.org/company-pierson-market-inc-in-flint-mi-31133)

The yellow building which had formally served as Pierson Market Inc was abandoned by the summer of 2014 and by 2015. Of course by 2015, the abandoned Pierson Market had become a hot spot for criminal activity. Wiring was stripped and stolen from the building. Much illegal criminal activity took place inside of here.

Amaro Shango purchased the land from Simon Khoshaba and Sulaiman Khoshaba in 2016. Amaro Shango had the building demolished in 2016. Peter Salomon and Amaro Shango currently own this land.
