Some history behind Ketchikan Pulp Company explored and explained.

Ketchikan Pulp Company was operated a saw mill and lumber mill to provide lumber goods to the community of Ketchikan sometime during the 1880s. The exact year of when Ketchikan Pulp Company first opened is unknown.

Ketchikan Pulp Company closed in 1997 after other lumber mills in the community opened. Tourism has flourished in Ketchikan and has become one of the leading economic forces in Ketchikan since the Ketchikan Pulp Mill closed in 1997. Ketchikan Pulp Company was abandoned in 1998. The reason the lumber mill abandoned their equipment was because the equipment would be too costly to remove. (Ref: https://live-fts.flickr.com/photos/bellrich/48231497987/in/pool-924385@N20/)

The closure of the Ketchikan Pulp Company's (KPC) mill has not led to an immediate contract cancellation. The forest service has agreed to make enough timber available under a renegotiated version of the contract to keep KPC's sawmills in Ketchikan and Metlakatla open for at least two years. Ketchikan Saw Mill/Ketchikan Pulp Mill had been producing a steady rate of MMBF per year prior to closure. The Silver Thimble Quilt Shop relocated to an area that was once the Ketchikan Saw Mill in 1999. The Silver Thimble Quilt Shop continues to operate here. (Ref: https://fiskarscraft.typepad.com/my_weblog/2011/09/more-from-alaska-quilting-in-ketchikan.html)

Part of Ketchikan Pulp Company became what is now Ketchikan Rainforest Sanctuary. Ketchikan Rainforest Sanctuary continues to claim ownership of this property as part of their rainforest sanctuary. This part of Ketchikan Saw Mill is now part of the tour of the Sanctuary Rainforest. That is why you can see totem poles and abandoned wood working equipment.
