History behind Brooks Avenue Baptist Church/Brook Avenue Baptist Church in Waco, Texas explored and explained in historic detail.

Brooks Avenue Baptist Church/Brook Avenue Baptist Church was organized on Brooks Avenue/Brook Avenue in Waco on the date of June 20, 1910. The church changed names multiple times and merged with others so there are various other churches mentioned throughout many records.

Brook Avenue Baptist Church was located at 7th Street and Brook Avenue and boasted a number of church organizations with a membership of 260. Rev J. E. Billington was their first pastor. (Ref: https://newspaperarchive.com/waco-morning-news-oct-31-1915-p-17/)

Rev. F. J Harrell was pastor of the Brooks Avenue Baptist Church for more than 3 decades. Rev. W. T. Turner was also pastor of Brooks Avenue Baptist Church in Waco for many years. Rev. Roy Smith was pastor of the Brook Avenue Church too.

Prayer meetings were held weekly in Church usually on Sunday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Night revival meetings are held from time to time. (Ref: Waco Morning News, October 31, 1915)


Brook Avenue Baptist Church merged into Calvary Baptist Church in February 1928 due to declining membership. Brook Avenue Baptist Church had been facing declining membership and so had Provident Heights Baptist Church. The congregations of Provident Heights Baptist Church and Brooks Avenue Baptist Church voted to merge into Calvary Baptist Church in February 1928. Calvary Baptist Church founded in February 1928 when the congregations of Provident Heights Baptist Church and Brooks Avenue Baptist Church voted to merge. That is why Provident Heights Baptist Church was combined into/with Brook Avenue Baptist Church to form Calvary Baptist Church in 1928. A Bible Institute was held at Brook Avenue Baptist Church beginning in December 9, 1933. Brook Avenue Baptist Church conducted a Bible indoctrination institute which was held each evening next week from 7 to 8 o’clock at the church. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/58213283/)

Brook Avenue Baptist Church sold their property on Brook Avenue and purchased a church building from North Waco United Pentecostal Church in 1969. Following the move, the church changed its name to Bethel Baptist Church. The membership of the church declined steadily through the 1970s and 1980s. Brook Avenue Baptist Church dissolved and closed in 1995 because the congregation folded. Brook Avenue Baptist Church sold the church property to Christ the King Church, a Spanish-speaking Baptist congregation, around 1996.
