History of Provident Heights Baptist Church in Waco, Texas explored.

Provident Heights Baptist Church was and is one of the many Baptist churches all over Waco, Texas. This news article will explain some of the history behind Provident Heights Baptist Church.




Provident Heights Baptist Church was established, organized, and constructed at the corner of North 18th Street & Bosque Boulevard in Waco, Texas in the year of 1909. Provident Heights Baptist Church added nearly 60 members to their congregation in the past 3 months during the early winter of 1917. A $32,000 addition was added to Provident Heights Baptist Church in 1925. This addition would serve as the Sunday School Department. The 3-story Sunday school was built by Homer T. Ainsworth at a cost of $32,000 dollars. Size of this building addition was 60 x 80 feet. This building met all standard requirements of a complete Baptist Sunday School building. [Although the weather conditions have been unfavorable, the series of meetings in progress at Provident Heights Baptist Church are growing in power. Rev. Ft. W. Leaser is doing the preaching and Rev. R. O. Cawkar is leading in the song service. There have been 11 additions to the church and several professions of faith. The meeting continues with preaching daily at 10 o’clock in the morning and 7:45 in the evening.]


The congregations of Provident Heights Baptist Church and Brooks Avenue Baptist Church voted to merge into Calvary Baptist Church in February 1928. Calvary Baptist Church founded in February 1928, when the congregations of Provident Heights Baptist Church and Brooks Avenue Baptist Church voted to merge.

Provident Heights Baptist Church sold their property and church building to Calvary Baptist Church for the price of $25,000 dollars on the date of Saturday, May 26, 1928. Provident Heights Baptist Church would no longer exist after that date. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/63300378/)

Both churches were facing declining membership. That is why Provident Heights Baptist Church was combined into/with Brook Avenue Baptist Church to form Calvary Baptist Church in 1928.
